Beautiful Taiwan Rainbow Shines for Record-Breaking Nine Hours

Tags:

Sometimes — if we’re lucky — we’ll spot a rainbow in the sky, usually lasting an hour at most and coming around after a rainfall. After all, like Dolly Parton taught us, “If you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.” One lucky town in Taiwan, however, had the unique chance to see a nine-hour rainbow. Could you imagine being able to look up at a beautiful beam of color all day long?

Last week, the Taiwan city of Taipei found itself painted in luck when a nine-hour rainbow appeared over the city, beginning on the morning of Thursday, November 30. According to the Chinese Culture University in Taipei, the brightly-colored arch of light hung around all day, giving the former record-holder for longest rainbow — Yorkshire, England — a run for its money. Watch the record-breaking rainbow transforms throughout the day in the videos below.

“It was amazing… It felt like a gift from the sky… It’s so rare!” Chinese Culture University Professor, Chou Kun-hsuan told BBC. “When we broke the previous record after passing six hours, I was hardly able to stay seated for lunch; it was around lunchtime. I was so excited; I wanted to make sure we captured the rainbow. But then it did something even more incredible; it went on to beat the previous record by another three hours!”

“With the 10,000 pictures we took in our department alone, and the many more taken by others on campus and people living nearby, I’m confident we can prove to Guinness second by second that this rainbow lasted for nine hours,” Prof Chou continued.

If confirmed, this nine-hour magnificence will shatter Yorkshire’s record (set on March, 14, 1994) into a pot of gold! According to the Guinness World Records, Yorkshire’s rainbow lasted from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

What caused this nine-hour wonder?

According to BBC, the rainbow was caused by a seasonal north-east monsoon that trapped moisture in the air, forming clouds, sunlight, and a slow wind speed. While these atmospheric conditions are relatively common in the winter months in Taipei’s Yangmingshan mountain range, this rainbow was by far one of the most magnificent sights the city has seen yet.

“I plan to contact the Taipei City tourism department to promote this. You can see a nine-hour rainbow in Taipei in the winter, it’s amazing! Come to Taipei!'” Chou added.
