Target Is Selling an Upside-Down Christmas Tree for $1,000 and We're Confused

We’re huge fans of Target over here, but one of their latest products has left us scratching our heads. According to the store’s official website, it’s now selling an upside down Christmas tree for nearly $1,000.

Correction: Target is actually selling five different upside down Christmas trees on its website. But understandably, the one that costs $1,000 is getting the most attention on social media. One baffled Twitter user shared a screen shot of that image with a caption that we can now relate to all too well.

She wrote, “I have a lot of questions. Why is Target selling an upside down Christmas tree? Why is it nearly $1000? Is this a Stranger Things joke that I’m missing? Someone help.”

Another confused user wrote, “1. Why is Target selling an upside down Christmas tree? 2. Why does it cost $989.21 when its ON SALE?”

Since then, other users have offered possible explanations for the upside down Christmas tree. One pointed out that it’s traditional to put the tree upside down in some Eastern European countries. Another explained that it’s a personal preference for some people, because they think it showcases all the ornaments better.

When asked by users about the tree, the official Twitter account for @askTarget admitted that the tree was “different looking,” but said that it is an Eastern European tradition regaining popularity in modern days.

Although we appreciate Target’s explanation about the background of the tree, this still doesn’t explain why the tree costs a grand, when you can easily snatch up a right-side-up tree for less than $100. In fact, even the “cheaper” upside down trees will set you back an eye-popping amount of money (for example, one is selling for $771.05).

We don’t know about you, but we haven’t been seeing a whole lot of upside down Christmas trees around this holiday season — and we’re not complaining! There’s something classic in this country about a right-side-up Christmas tree. It brings back so many warm memories of decorating with family and friends. If it’s challenging to showcase all our beautiful ornaments that represent those treasured memories, then that’s a challenge we’re up for.

We’ll take that over being on-trend any day.
