You know the friend who always seems to get what she wants? The one for whom things always work out? Yep, we all have one of those. (And we’re happy for her, but how the heck does she make it all look so easy?) Well, she’s an Aries, and Aries zodiac signs are winners — not because they’re better than anyone, but because they want to win. When Aries the Ram sets her mind to something, she gets it.

Interested in learning more about this confident and fiery zodiac sign? Perhaps you’re an Aries looking to understand your best — or worst — qualities. Or maybe you’ve got an Aries friend that you’d like to know better. Whatever the case, here’s what makes this fearless fire sign tick.

Aries 101: The Basics

Before we dive into the nitty-gritty of Aries’ many characteristics, let’s unpack the basics.

In astrology, Aries (called Mesha in Vedic astrology) is the first sign of the zodiac, believed to govern the period from March 21 to April 19th. According to experts, the fire sign’s representation as a Ram comes from the Egyptian god Amon-Ra, who was depicted as a man with a Ram’s head. He symbolizes creation that is made from the will of the spirit, and he rules over fertility and creativity.

What are Aries personality traits?

Those born under the Amon-Ra Egyptian God sign are talented, passionate, dynamic, and optimistic. They possess a strong sense of self-worth and charge through life headfirst (like the Ram) without the burden of concern or worry. Aries is the first sign to lead the 12 astrological signs in the zodiac — and that’s exactly how this fire sign views itself: the first to lead the pack. Here are some other Aries’ personality traits:

Fearless

Aries is the bravest of them all. They’re courageous, passionate, and headstrong. Even in the midst of conflict, this fearless sun sign doesn’t shy away from standing its ground. They love taking on new challenges and stepping out of their comfort zone

Impulsive

In terms of emotions, the fiery Ram is often seen as reactive and tempestuous. When it comes to making decisions, Aries tend to respond hastily. If they have eyes set on a goal or objective, they can get tunnel vision and make important decisions without taking pros and cons into account first. In short, this cardinal fire sign is not known for its patience and would much rather get things moving — even without proper planning. Impulsivity has its place … but Aries doesn’t always wield it well.

Charismatic

It’s not difficult for Aries to make an entrance. They exude confidence when they enter a room, and it’s nearly impossible not to take notice. In addition to their bold, go-getter energy, feisty Rams have the words “force to be reckoned with” stamped across their foreheads. This fire sign means serious business. What’s more, Aries tend to be positive, energetic, daring, and enthusiastic, which draws people to them. They are extremely charismatic, undeniably charming, and have a zest for life.

Independent

One of the things that makes Aries so independent is their unwavering faith in themselves. They often make risky decisions (or simply the wrong ones), but they know that at the end of the day, they will get to where they need to be and learn what they need to know. In other words, they trust their intuition.

This feisty fire sign won’t be held back by anything or anyone — they’re always pursuing what they want, even when others try to talk them out of it. Bottom line: Aries are independent creatures who don’t like to be told what to do.

Competitive

As a fire sign, the competitive Ram is fueled by intensity. They absolutely love to challenge others to friendly competition and jump at the chance to take first place. Aries’ ruler is the planet Mars, which was named after the Roman god of war. Seeing as Mars represents vigor and action, it makes sense that Aries is driven to win at all costs.

Egotistical

Aries can be dangerously selfish at times. If it’s about satisfying their egos or gaining benefit, this fire sign can go to any height. Why? Because Aries sometimes care very little about others’ needs. That said, while the ego on Rams can be hard to roll with at times, they’re as quick to make up as they are to fight.

Who is Aries compatible with?

When it comes to relationships, Rams are neither afraid to jump in head first nor shy about expressing their feelings. Their fearlessness means they can be very intense and romantic without concern for the consequences. If someone’s not used to such boldness, they may find being in a romantic relationship with this fire sign a bit of a shock.

That said, there are three star signs with whom Aries’ compatibility naturally soars: Leo, Gemini, and Sagittarius. These zodiac pairings are most likely to result in harmonious relationships that are not only passionate and fun but built to last.

Aries and Leo

The brazen Ram and the bold Lion are both fire signs, so it makes perfect sense that the combo of their burning passion and high-achieving natures is a recipe for success. In this whirlwind of big energy, it’s common to see Aries-Leo couples respecting each other’s independence, which is undoubtedly important for the two fire signs. But, since both zodiacs crave the limelight, it’s crucial to make an effort to celebrate each other’s individual victories and avoid competition.

Aries and Gemini

An Aries-Gemini duo is strong, and these two star signs are compatible in every sense. One of the best aspects of this pairing is how well their personalities mesh. The fiery Ram has a reputation for being bossy, whereas the air-ruled Celestial Twins want to be told what to do without being explicitly controlled.

Aries and Sagittarius

Aries and Sagittarius are fantastic companions. They’re both incredibly curious as well as playful, lively, and chatty. Both sun signs are adventurers and innovators, which makes for a thrilling connection that runs on both partners’ never-ending thirst for new knowledge. When these two zodiacs come together in a love affair, it can be a match made in zodiac heaven!

What about the other signs?

Of course, there are more than four signs of the zodiac. Aries’ compatibility with the other signs may not be as strong as their connections with Sag, Gemini, and Leo, but that doesn’t mean all is lost if you or your partner isn’t the ideal zodiac match for the action-oriented Ram.

In a nutshell, these signs are still pretty compatible with Aries energy, as long as they’re willing to put in a little work:

  • Aquarius
  • Libra
  • Pisces
  • Taurus

Meanwhile, there are a few signs that should definitely proceed with caution before cuddling up with a pioneering Aries woman:

  • Virgo
  • Scorpio
  • Cancer
  • Capricorn

Still, anyone who loves astrology knows that there’s more to compatibility than your daily horoscope or trending memes on Facebook. Whether you’re an air sign or a water sign, there are Aries friends (and lovers) to be made. After all, your Venus sign is just as important for compatibility as your sun sign, right?

Written In the Stars

Aries is the fierce individualist of the 12 astrological zodiac signs. They’re natural-born leaders who are passionate and independent. Being ruled by Mars — the red planet of war — this fire sign is always battle-ready and determined to win.
