While often workaholics, they’re also the ones you turn to for solutions to big problems.

While astrology and horoscopes are often associated with powers beyond our control, astrological signs actually reveal a lot about us and the way we interact with the world. For astrology novices, here are the basics: There are twelve sun signs in the western zodiac, and each has its own associated mythology, animals, and characteristics. These are also categorized into four elemental groups: earth signs, air signs, water signs, and fire signs. Our full birth charts include details like moon signs and rising signs, too. If you’re looking to learn more about Capricorn traits and their compatibility with others in personal and professional relationships, here’s a summary.

Capricorn at a Glance

Capricorn is the last earth sign in the calendar, governing the period from December 22 to January 21. It’s one of four Cardinal signs that commence each of the seasons. This is perhaps why Capricorns are often wise leaders. Capricorn is represented by the Sea Goat, and its ruling planet is Saturn. The latter explains a lot about the Capricorn personality, specifically their ambitiousness and honesty.

Ambitious and Hardworking

All three earth signs — Virgo, Taurus, and Capricorn — are known for being incredibly hard working and having very high standards. Like Aries and Leo, Capricorns are persistent, determined, and fearless in the face of challenge. Capricorns are known for setting their eyes on a project or goal and meeting it at any cost. They’re not afraid to step up to the plate, and very little keeps a Capricorn down — even relentless rejection. Though reliable in professional settings and consistent in meeting their goals, their focus on the bigger picture means they often miss smaller details.

Long-Term Planners

Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, which is associated with several of the sign’s defining traits. Among these are responsibility and hard work. But Saturn is also associated with time … and time has an enormous impact on Capricorns. In their day-to-day lives, Capricorns are keenly aware of time passing, and they worry about having insufficient time to achieve their many goals. It’s why Capricorns aim for long-term achievements over short-term gains. It’s also why they are unbothered by near-term deadlines and details — they’re looking farther down the line and have little concern about what’s directly in front of them. Large milestones that contribute to the feeling of time passing can put a Capricorn on edge. The good news, however, is that Capricorns tend to relax their focus on time — or the lack thereof — as they age.

Honest

Capricorns don’t like to waste time, which means they don’t sugarcoat hard truths or beat around the bush. This may come across as judgmental, but Capricorns don’t mean to sound harsh. They simply value honesty and transparency. For them, these traits are a mark of respect for their friends and loved ones. They also save time with honesty — no need to mince words and over explain things — which Capricorns are all about. But it’s important for Capricorns to remember how other signs communicate. While they shouldn’t change their style of communication for others, their tough love manner of speaking can be difficult for some to deal with. If Capricorns are struggling to meet friends or coworkers in the middle, adjusting the communication style could bridge the gap.

Good Friends

Capricorns are known for being blunt, but when a Capricorn chooses you as a friend, it’s for life. They’re incredibly loyal, and their hardworking, problem-solving nature means there’s no issue they can’t solve. In romantic relationships, Capricorns are consistently compatible with other earth signs and water signs like Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces — the truth, though, is that they get along with everyone. Because they keep so busy, they prefer true friendships that don’t cause needless drama or discord. They want friends to respect their time and energy, and they promise to do the same in return. For them, honesty is a sign of respect, and while their communication style can be terse, a Capricorn will always have your back.

Devilish

Capricorns may appear to be workaholics, but they’re represented by the Sea Goat for a reason. The Sea Goat comprises two different animals — the goat and the fish — which explains why Capricorns move so fluidly between the material and emotional worlds. The Sea Goat was likely inspired by Pan (from the Greek pantheon), and Capricorn’s personality and sense of humor are a testament to these roots. Below their icy exteriors, all Capricorns have a bit of devilishness in them. They love to tease, and they like getting into trouble, which they’ll happily involve friends in. Capricorns are represented by the Devil card in Tarot, and close friends and family members know that they are the life of the party when they can learn to relax.

Young at Heart

Capricorns tend to chill out with age. While they’re obsessed with time’s passage and focused on meeting their goals, achieving said goals will put Capricorns at ease. It’s been said that Capricorns age backward, taking on more relaxed personality traits and behaviors as they grow older, rather than the other way around. Mature Capricorns are likely to be optimistic and playful, and the older they get, the more of that Sea Goat devilishness comes out.

Leadership

Because Capricorns aren’t afraid of hard work and honest communication, they make excellent leaders. In fact, many of the most influential names of our time, from Dolly Parton to Michelle Obama, fall under the Capricorn headline, and it’s easy to see why.

While Capricorns do not typically request leadership positions, they tend to excel in them. They can make challenging decisions and see the longer-term picture, which allows them to decide what’s best for organizations and communities without getting bogged down by details. Capricorns won’t waste time with sugar coating, so you’ll always know you’re getting the truth in conversations with them. And their work ethic just can’t be beat. Additionally, Capricorns are extremely loyal, and will fight for the team, business, or people they represent. (And given Capricorn’s resilience and ambition, the fight probably won’t take too long.)

The Last Word

Capricorns are just one of those zodiac signs that can really make a difference. While they aren’t the loudest nor flashiest ones in the room, their hard work and determination are qualities that set them apart from the crowd. They look at the long term and don’t sweat the small stuff. While they are often workaholics, they’re also the ones you turn to when in need of solutions to big problems.

As they get older, some of that intensity will relax, making Capricorns a blast to hang out with while remaining the loyal friend that always has your back. They’re represented by the Sea Goat, which hints at their slightly devilish side, as well as the duality of man. Capricorns’ association with time and relationship to Saturn are what enable them to relax and enjoy the spoils of their hard work after big picture deadlines and goals are met.
