On a chilly night in March 2018, Laura Musall woke up drenched in sweat … again. Ever since starting menopause, the Fishers, Indiana 52-year-old had been experiencing severe night sweats. I can’t take this anymore, Laura sighed. Overwhelmed with frustration, she sent a group text to her girlfriends to commiserate, quipping, There need to be pajamas that somehow keep us cool!
Almost immediately, her longtime friend Mindy Ford, 50, and also in the throes of a menopausal meltdown, replied: Can I get a job at your pj company?
Laura chuckled. But the comment sparked an idea. There really should be sleepwear for menopausal women waking up with night sweats, she thought. The next day, she told Mindy, “I’m just going to create my own pajamas.”
“I meant what I said — count me in!” Mindy replied enthusiastically.
A Genius Solution
Though Laura and Mindy were both busy with full-time jobs, they spent every spare moment researching fabrics.
They consulted medical professionals, textile experts and tons of ordinary women in pursuit of an alternative to flannel, fleece, cotton and polyester-all the usual pajama materials. Finally, they discovered a fabric made from bamboo, which is naturally cooling and moisture-wicking, yet soft and luxurious-feeling. “It’s even machine-washable!” they cheered.
They took some of the fabric to a seamstress along with a rough sketch of their pajamas, and after having some samples made, Laura and Mindy began wearing the pajamas.
“This is definitely it!” Mindy told Laura the next morning, marveling at how she hadn’t woken up sweating even once through the night.
“They really are the best pj’s I’ve ever worn,” Laura raved.
Focus groups of local women over 40 agreed and offered some helpful feedback that Laura and Mindy used to fine-tune their designs. They then found a manufacturer, and by mid-2019, CoolRevolution PJs launched, offering women’s pajamas in two styles of tops and bottoms: T-shirts and tank tops that could be paired with matching pants or shorts, both with pockets, ranging in price from $42 to $55.
Almost immediately, they began receiving grateful emails from happy customers. Women shared how they used to have to get up and change pajamas and sometimes sheets in the middle of the night. One said she’d worn her workout clothes to bed, while another said she’d taken to sleeping on a cooling dog bed — but now, finally, they had relief!
“It’s wonderful to make a difference in other women’s lives,” says Mindy, with a smile.
“It’s been a labor of love,” Laura agrees. “How you sleep impacts your whole life. We’re thrilled to help women get the rest they need to be their best selves!”
