This Warming Spiced Tea Helps Fight Inflammation and Ease Migraine Pain

Tags:

After a long day, a warm cup of tea is my ultimate soothing sip to relax into the evening. Just as much as I’m an avid coffee lover, I’m always in search of new tea blends, especially if they have health-boosting ingredients to nix bothersome pains or aches. That’s why, when I learned that ginger cinnamon tea can provide natural relief for inflammation and migraines, I decided to give it a go!

What is ginger and cinnamon tea good for?

Cinnamon and ginger’s bold flavors are often used to spice up golden lattes and thyroid-boosting smoothies. However, they also work well together to fight off inflammation and migraine pain.

A study published in the journal Cephalalgia looked at the positive effects at taking 400 mg. of ginger extract in participants who experienced one to six migraine attacks per month. An hour after taking the extract, participants began to feel less pain. Researchers credited this result to the compounds in ginger, such as gingerols and shogaols, reducing inflammatory markers that cause pain.

Cinnamon also demonstrates a similar benefit, as a study published in Phytotherapy Research showed. Researchers tested out how well cinnamon capsules work to relieve migraines, noting that having higher levels of molecules called interleukin-6 (IL-6), calcitonin-gene-related peptide (CGRP), and nitric oxide (NO) can trigger inflammation and migraine flare-ups. After taking three 600 mg. cinnamon supplements every day, participants had lower levels of IL-6 and NO, while CGRP levels stayed the same. This resulted in participants having less frequent and painful migraines after two months.

While these spices are must-have staples in your diet, and most of us cook with them frequently, enjoying them in tea is a much more calming way to get migraine relief.

Can I drink ginger cinnamon tea every day?

If you love the warming spiced flavor of ginger cinnamon tea, you can find it in stores and online. (One to try: Friendship Organics Ginger Cinnamon Tea, Buy from Amazon, $9.99) Feel free to drink it daily, because regular consumption of teas containing ginger and cinnamon aren’t likely to cause negative side effects. However, if you’re dealing with painful migraines on a constant basis, it’s best to speak with your doctor to find additional ways to relieve them.

If you ask me, having a piping hot mug of this fragrant tea sounds like the ideal way to unwind and get rid of headaches. I’ll definitely be adding it to my tea rotation very soon! (Click through for more migraine self-care remedies.)
