Which vitamins and nutrients are best to boost immunity now? We asked functional health expert Fred Pescatore, M.D., who reports: “I personally take these to lower my risk of getting COVID-19 and reduce complications should I get sick. They work together to balance your immune system and support your lungs.” Here’s his advice.
Prevent pneumonia with vitamin C
Pneumonia is common with COVID, but vitamin C can reduce the risk of contracting the secondary infection by up to 95 percent according to a study in JAMA. The reason? It has the ability to destroy both bacterial and viral pneumonia, says Dr. Pescatore. “I take and recommend 3,000 mg. daily, but if you aren’t currently taking C, then gradually work up to that dose to avoid diarrhea.” He likes Ester-C (Buy at Amazon, $10.79) but says any type works.
Destroy invaders with vitamin D
Vitamin D-3 helps white blood cells destroy viruses that sneak into lungs, lowering the risk of respiratory infection by 64 percent and COVID complications seven-fold. While sunshine boosts D-3, supplementing ensures adequate levels. Dr. Pescatore says, “I suggest 50,000 IU for two days, then 15,000 IU daily.” Try NatureWise Vitamin D3 5,000, (Buy at Amazon, $12.89).
Halt viral spread with zinc lozenges
Scientist say zinc keeps viral cells from replicating. That’s why Dr. Pescatore takes 50 mg. per day. He prefers lozenges because respiratory viruses enter the body through the throat and nose, and putting zinc directly into your mouth allows the mineral to attack the virus at its point of entry. Try Wonder Laboratories Zinc Lozanges, (Buy at Amazon, $13.99).
Fortify lungs with vitamin A
The fat-soluble vitamin keeps mucus flowing, which prevents viruses from sticking, replicating and making you sick, explains Dr. Pescatore. “I’d start with 40,000 IU of vitamin A for two days, then 10,000 IU daily thereafter.” Try Bronson Vitamin A 10,000 IU (Buy at Amazon, $14.99).
Stay safe for less!
Dr. Pescatore’s personal COVID-19 protection protocol is easy to follow-and after the first introductory days, it costs just $1 a day. He explains, “This combination will help your body respond effectively to any virus.”
