The Pioneer Woman Gets Real About ‘Banned Phrases’ on Her Show

Tags:

The Pioneer Woman has been on camera for a long time now, but that doesn’t mean she’s totally at ease with it. Food Network star Ree Drummond confessed in a recent interview with Delish that she’s her own “worst critic” and that she’s even banned certain phrases on her show.

One banned phrase is “my absolute favorite.”

Drummond said, “Not everything can be my favorite, but for some reason, everything is on my show. When I love something, I just say it’s my favorite. ‘Absolutely scrumptious’ or the word ‘just’ — ‘I’m just gonna,’ ‘I’m just gonna stir,’ ‘I’m just gonna add.’ I’m my own worst critic.”

Raise your hand if you’ve ever used phrases like that before (ours are held pretty high right about now). But even though Drummond banned those phrases, she learned a valuable (and pretty deep!) lesson about what it means when we use words like that.

She said, “It’s a crutch. It is. When we’re terrified, we rely on crutches, but you know, it’s all part of the journey of life.”

And what a journey it’s been for Ree Drummond. A food blogger turned TV star, she now has more than 200 episodes under her belt. But as she put it, she wishes she could erase the first 15 of them.

“Oh, I was so green,” she said. “If I ever catch one on TV, from time to time, I’m just like, ‘wow.’ I had no clue. I still feel like some days I’m not sure what I’m doing, but I really didn’t know what I was doing then.”

I was mid-sentence and have a goofy look on my face, but wanted to show you a behind-the-scenes peek at a video I shot for @landolakesktchn last Friday. I'll post it next week (recipe is yummy!) but this video is notable because I shot it in my house rather than the Lodge, where we film my show! I had to walk around and make sure I'd picked up all the socks (and other things) off the floor first, but it was fun! Except my oven was acting up and I kept having to flip the breaker to finish the recipe. Oh, and this has been going on for a year. I guess I just decided along the way that flipping a breaker to use my oven is normal? Probably easier than getting the oven fixed! Thank you for listening.

But she maintains that it’s all part of the process, and that she’s happy to share her life with the world. And she’s also happy to share one of the best lessons she learned: to not say yes to everything.

She said, “I have learned that if I say yes to everything, I will be more of a crazy person than I already am. I’ve found that the worst thing is to say yes to something that doesn’t feel right, because then you’re busy and having to balance something you don’t really believe in. We put a lot of pressure on ourselves. It’s okay to say no, and make choices, and preserve your resources, so you have what you need to give to the people you love.”

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves!
