Zoos’ Amazon-Style ‘Reviews’ of Their Animals Are Too Funny
“Sturdy built, totally winter-ready, and waterproof. Only comes in brown, but that’s actually a plus for me.” If that sounds to you like a a nice pair of boots, you’d be right. But if it also sounds like an adorable sea otter pup, you’d still be right — thanks to some hilariously creative animal experts writing “reviews” of our best non-human friends.
The trend really took off on Twitter thanks to Shervin Hess, the digital media lead at Oregon Zoo. Hess, who adores a sea otter baby at the zoo, was browsing on Amazon when he was struck by how one review reminded him so much of his “otter son.”
“A few weeks ago, I read an Amazon review for hiking boots and it was basically describing him — waterproof, great for winter, only comes in brown,” Hess said. “So the tweets just started writing themselves at that point.”
It’s no surprise that this “Amazon review” got so many stars — not to mention likes and retweets from the zoo’s Twitter followers. Look at that little face!

Overall very good first impressions. Sturdy built, totally winter-ready and waterproof. Only comes in brown but that’s actually a plus for me. #rateaspecies pic.twitter.com/IK99ODsTPT
Hess continued on with these clever joke reviews with other animals at the zoo, all with the hashtag #rateaspecies.

Cleanup is a breeze. Gets rid of really strong odors. WAY bigger than I expected. So glad they didn’t stop making these. On backorder now #rateaspecies pic.twitter.com/nrI1CacM9a
Before long, the Oregon Zoo wasn’t the only organization rating their adorable creatures. Other zoos, along with aquariums and popular scientists, started getting in on the fun, too. We have to say, it’s one of the most wholesome — and cutest — social media trends we’ve seen in a long time.

I was skeptical but this really works! You can't just put any kind of kangaroo in a tree. You need to make sure you get the right kind. Look for labels like "Matschie's" or "Goodfellow's" to know it's the real deal.

If only we could really order all this adorableness on Amazon!
