Can a mattress cause back and hip pain?
Many factors can cause back and hip pain, including arthritis, pinched nerves (i.e. sciatica), and physical injuries. Unfortunately, we become more susceptible to these conditions as we age, so it’s important to make sure we take precautions to keep aches and pains to a minimum.
According to Dr. Romina Ghassemi, a Los Angeles-based chiropractor, mattresses can play a part, too. “Prolonged poor posture during the day lends a hand to a poor mattress to cause more harm to an already compromised muscular skeletal system,” says Dr. Ghassemi. In addition, New York City-based chiropractor Dr. Steve Malayil says that certain types of mattresses might not have adequate support, which could lead to more pain. “Soft mattresses, which allow the body to sink in too much, may cause the spine to be in an uncomfortable position, which may cause an increase in lower back pain,” says Dr. Malayil. “Many older spring mattresses have lost their stability and allow for less contour to the lower back. They lack the ability to mold to your body.” Therefore, it’s important to invest wisely in a mattress that will serve your needs, in addition to adopting lifestyle habits that will promote better alignment.
With that said, something else to keep in mind is sleep positioning. The way we sleep has the potential to cause pain, as different positions put pressure on different areas. “Sleeping on your side can overload the hip joint,” says Dr. Ghassemi, as side sleepers place all of their weight on one side of their bodies. To avoid discomfort, the Cleveland Clinic recommends switching up which side you sleep on, so that one side isn’t bearing all of the pressure. For the best results, however, they suggest sleeping on your back, which they feel is the ideal position, as it “evenly distributes weight across the widest surface of your body, minimizing pressure points and ensuring proper alignment of your internal organs.”
What is the best mattress for joint and back pain?
Back and joint pain are common symptoms of arthritis, which, according to a 2019 statistic from the Arthritis Foundation, affects more than 54 million Americans (and a whopping 85 percent are female — lucky us!). To help combat these conditions, look for a mattress that’s both supportive enough to relieve pressure on the joints, and also encourages proper spinal alignment. Oh, and make sure it’s comfortable for you!
“You have to think about two types of matters when investing thousands of dollars into your sleep,” says Dr. Ghassemi. “Consider two facts: One: How it feels, and Two: Is it good for me? If it’s soft on the body, does it mold to my body? Is it hard on my body?” For Dr. Malayil, support is key. “I would recommend something much firmer for patients because it allows for better support of the spine and reduces the likelihood of the spine sinking into a compromised position for extended periods of time.”
A great option for anyone experiencing joint and back pain is the Tempur-Pedic Advanced Pressure Relief ProAdapt, which comes in four softness levels, including firm for added stability. It’s made with Tempur-Pedic’s signature TEMPUR material to provide support for any vulnerable areas, while also adapting to your body for personalized comfort.
At the end of the day, there are several factors you’ll want to keep in mind when choosing a mattress. “If it’s ‘good for you’ depends on your body type,” says Dr. Ghassemi. “If you have a history of lower back pain, look for a firm mattress. If you suffer from hot flashes, stay away from fitting types. If you have difficulty breathing, choosing an adjustable mattress is essential for elevation.”
What kind of mattress is best for lower back pain?
Back pain is one of the most common conditions for stomach sleepers, as the weight in our abdomens can sink down and create a curve in our lower backs. The Cleveland Clinic actually dubs stomach sleeping the “worst position” (I’m guilty of this!), since it can also distort your neck, and recommends sleeping on your back to promote better alignment and even weight distribution.
That said, sleepers of all types can suffer from lower back pain, and if you’re one of them, look for a mattress with ample support to keep your spine in check. “Firmer mattresses, such as those made of latex and memory foam, would be much better for the lower back because it will conform to the body much better and will allow much more support to your spine,” says Dr. Malayil. We love the Solaire Adjustable Mattress from Saatva, which is made with both Talalay latex and gel-infused memory foam, and comes with a remote control to choose from 50 firmness settings for a truly customized feel.
Is a soft mattress good for hip pain?
It makes sense to assume that a softer mattress is the best option for pain relief. After all, we all want a little coddling when we’re not feeling well! However, a mattress that’s too soft can actually have negative effects on our bodies, as they can sink too much, distorting our alignment. According to Dr. Ghassemi, “We all have the same skeletal system, but our daily lifestyle, health status, and body morphology are vastly different. I can conservatively say, a soft mattress is not suitable for the hip/hip condition; it may cause more damage in the majority of people than help.” Dr. Malayil adds, “For individuals with hip pain, a foam mattress which conforms to your spine would be best. Many spring mattresses tend to apply too much pressure to the hip joint causing increased pain for many individuals. A foam mattress is helpful in this situation because it allows for the hips to lay in a comfortable position without applying overpressure to the musculature around the hip and to the hip joint itself.”
Since the hip is “one of the body’s largest weight-bearing joints,” it’s also one of the most vulnerable. As mentioned before, sleeping on one’s side can exacerbate the hip, so Dr. Ghassemi suggests enlisting the help of a pillow to balance things out. “Try mitigating damages by placing a pillow between bent knees. Bring knees to the chest by 20 to 40 percent and place a soft pillow in between the knees. This will reduce the load on the pelvis and hip and distribute the load (weight of upper leg and thigh) over the lower [leg] and help relax the body to better sleep.” No matter your sleep position, finding the best body pillow can have great benefits, including correcting your alignment, minimizing tension, and reducing pressure.

Our Picks for the Best Mattress for Back and Hip Pain
Why we like it:
- 4 softness levels to choose from
- Made from material with advanced pressure-relieving power
- TEMPUR Material adapts to your body for personalized comfort
You don’t need to be a mattress expert to have heard of Tempur-Pedic — they’re one of the top mattress brands for a reason! While they have several great options to choose from, the Tempur-Pedic ProAdapt is their most popular mattress, thanks to its versatility and advanced pressure-relieving power. Just like all of Tempur-Pedic’s mattresses, this one is constructed with the brand’s signature trademarked TEMPUR Material, which was developed by NASA for cushioning astronauts during space travel. It strikes the perfect balance between comfort and support, and comes in four different softness levels (the most of any Tempur-Pedic mattress), including soft, medium, medium hybrid, and firm, so you can select the feel that’s most comfortable for you, and join the many reviewers who say the ProAdapt has changed their sleep quality for the better.
Tempur-Pedic’s products are on the pricier side, but they offer a 90-night trial so you can make sure the mattress is the right one for you, in addition to a 10-year warranty for extra assurance.
Happy customer: “This is what I imagine mattresses in heaven feel like. I had serious back pains with our old mattress. I knew I had to get serious about my mattress choice. I was hesitant to spend this much but it was without a doubt money well spent. My back pains are gone and I am no longer tossing and turning at night. You can’t put a price on a good night’s sleep.”
Why we like it:
- Made with 40 percent more TEMPUR Material
- 30 percent more conforming support for maximum pressure relief
- Confines disruptive outside motions
If you suffer from aches and pains at night, the Tempur-Pedic LuxeAdapt was designed with you in mind. It’s constructed with 40 percent more TEMPUR Material than its original mattress, which increases its conforming support by 30 percent to help alleviate pain caused by pressure points. This 13-inch-thick mattress is also great for sleeping with partners or pets, as its superior motion cancellation capabilities will keep you from feeling any tossing and turning from other parts of the bed, allowing you to keep snoozing without disruption. Yes, Tempur-Pedic is likely the reason you’re familiar with those famous “Wine Glass Tests” from the 90s! Choose either a soft or firm feel (Dr. Ghassemi recommends back and hip pain sufferers opt for a firmer feel), and rest assured that your purchase is backed by Tempur-Pedic’s 10-year warranty.
Happy customer: “I’ve never had such great sleep before. There are two things I immediately noticed over this past week of sleep: 1. It alleviates pressure points! Before, I would constantly toss and turn because one side would get tired of being laid on, and it was time to flip. Now, I can easily lay on one side most of the night because I no longer get that need-to-turn feeling. It’s the GREATEST. 2. I’ve been waking up on my back! This came as a huge surprise. As a major side sleeper, I’ve never slept on my back. But this past week, I’ve fallen asleep on my back quite a few times because it’s actually comfortable for the first time!”
Why we like it:
- Includes both soft and firm sides
- Copper-infused foam keeps you feeling cooler at night
- Comes with 2 free memory foam pillows
Can’t decide if you want a firm mattress or a softer one? With the Layla Hybrid, you can have it all! This two-in-one mattress is firm and supportive on one side and soft and plush on the other, so all you have to do is flip it over using the built-in handles to suit your comfort preferences. For those of us who tend to sleep hot, it’s made with copper-infused foam, which helps to quickly draw heat away from your body, so you stay cooler throughout the night. Copper is also anti-microbial, so it repels odor-causing bacteria to keep your bed feeling fresh and clean. Have jumpy pets or kids? The Layla Hybrid’s internal pocketed coil system, paired with copper-infused memory foam’s firming response to pressure, ensures any unexpected movements stay confined without disturbing your sleep. Best of all? This mattress comes with two of Layla’s memory foam pillows so you can doze off even more comfortably.
Happy customer: “So I have major back problems: 2 herniated discs, scoliosis, arthritis… the list goes on. I tried the new Layla Hybrid and am in love! The firm side is just right for me, offering great support and comfort. This paired with the adjustable bed frame allows me to finally have a good night’s rest.”
Why we like it:
- ActiveCool technology adapts to your temperature
- 4 inches of gel memory foam help relieve joint pressure
- Comes with Nectar’s “Forever Warranty”
Let’s face it, hip pain and sciatica aren’t exactly sleep-friendly conditions. Luckily, finding the right mattress can help ease discomfort for a more restful sleep, and the Nectar Premier Copper Memory Foam Mattress has all the makings of a swoon-worthy sleep surface. It clocks in at a 6.5 on the firmness scale, which Nectar deems “just right” for that supportive yet comfortable sweet spot (it’s just above medium firmness). To take some of the pressure off your back, joints, and muscles, the Nectar Premier Copper comes with a taller base to encourage proper spinal alignment, as well as allow the support foam layer to ease your hips, shoulders, and legs.
If you prefer to feel cooler at night, a four-inch ActiveCool smart layer adapts to your body temperature, while the gel-infused memory foam cradles your body’s curves. For an even stronger cooling effect, the mattress is topped with a breathable quilted cover made with heat-conductive copper fibers to keep you feeling refreshed. Best of all, your mattress purchase comes with a complimentary set of cooling pillows, a sheet set, and mattress protector — and as if that weren’t enough, the quality of Nectar’s products is reinforced by its signature “Forever Warranty.”

Why we like it:
- Available in soft, medium, and firm
- Made with TitanFlex foam for responsiveness and pressure point relief
- CopperFlex top layer draws heat away from the body
Arthritis symptoms, like pain, swelling, and stiffness, are no fun — and unfortunately, they become increasingly common as we age. Rather than surrender to the discomfort, we can take steps to improve how we feel, and investing in a supportive mattress can make a world of difference. The Brooklyn Aurora Hybrid mattress comes in three different options: soft, medium, and firm, making it a great customizable mattress to suit your body’s individual needs. For those with arthritic joint pain, a soft or medium feel might offer the most cushioning for vulnerable areas, while the hybrid design offers the best of both worlds in terms of comfort and support.
The Aurora Hybrid mattress is constructed of Brooklyn Bedding’s trademarked TitanFlex foam, which conforms to the shape of your body while offering pressure point relief. This cushy foam, combined with the support of up to 1,032 individually encased coils, encourages a comfortable sleep experience, no matter your firmness preference. To top it off, a layer of patented CopperFlex foam and TitanCool draws away excess heat from your body, so you’ll sleep cool as a cucumber.
Happy customer: “Purchased the Aurora after much research. I admit that I was VERY nervous about purchasing a “bed in a box.” I have arthritis in both hips, so I did not think any bed would help. This bed is absolute heaven! No more having to get up after 6 hours in bed because of pain. It’s like a cloud, without the sinking in feeling. My bf weighs 80 pounds more than me, and he is also in love with our new bed… I was worried that it would be too soft for him, but it’s not an issue at all. It’s like the perfect bed, not too soft, but relieves pressure on my hips. Heaven. So happy with my purchase.”
Why we like it:
- Feels up to 8 degrees cooler than other Tempur-Pedic mattresses
- Includes a machine-washable SmartClimate Cover
- TEMPUR-CM+ comfort layer keeps you cool throughout the night
Hot sleepers, rejoice! The LUXEbreeze mattress from Tempur-Pedic is designed to feel up to eight degrees cooler (!) than the popular brand’s non-cooling mattresses, so you can experience a comfortable night’s sleep without waking up in a sweat. Made with trademarked PureCool+ Phase Change Material, this mattress starts offering a cooling sensation minutes after you lie down, while the advanced TEMPUR-CM+ comfort layer ensures you stay cool all through the night. For an added cooling experience, it also comes with a SmartClimate Cover, which can be zipped off and thrown in the washing machine for easy cleaning. And, in addition to keeping you cool, the LUXEbreeze nixes stuffiness in favor of ventilation, thanks to its breathable TEMPUR-APR Material. Only a semi-hot sleeper? Tempur-Pedic also makes a PRObreeze mattress ($3,499), which feels up to three degrees cooler than their standard mattresses.
Happy customer: “This mattress is, hands down, the best mattress we’ve ever owned. It molds to our bodies when we lay in it, providing comfortable support, and you can actually feel the cool-down effect. I’d equate it to the cool side of a pillow. I’m a “hot sleeper” and usually wake up sweaty, but since having this mattress that hasn’t happened once! It’s really amazing and has definitely provided better, undisturbed sleep. I can’t recommend this mattress enough and am now a HUGE believer in investing in one of the products you spend the most time on — your mattress!”
Why we like it:
- Made with organic certified latex, wool, and cotton
- Available in standard and pillow-top models
- Non-toxic and climate-neutral certified
With the Avocado Green Mattress, you can rest easy — literally and figuratively! — knowing that your sleeping surface is made with organic certified materials and is free of toxins. Back sleepers, as well as stomach sleepers, will appreciate its medium-firm feel, which offers just the right proportion of comfort and support. A three-inch layer of organic latex rubber foam, paired with up to 1,414 individually tuned coils, helps alleviate back, shoulder, and hip pain, promotes proper alignment, evenly distributes body weight, and reduces motion transfer, so you can catch some Zzzs in peace. If you prefer a softer surface, you can opt for the attached pillow top model (additional $400), which adds an extra two layers of plush foam. Another reason to love this mattress? In 2020, Avocado went carbon negative, making it one of the most eco-conscious bedding brands out there.
Happy customer: “The mattress is so comfortable that we truly never want to get out of bed in the morning. I have thought my past two mattresses were amazing, but this one makes those look like a cement slab. Every night I sink into it and I am instantly cocooned. It works for me (back sleeper and side sleeper) and my boyfriend (almost always on his stomach), which is practically unheard of. I would recommend Avocado to anyone who needs a new mattress.”
Why we like it:
- Designed to provide pressure relief to areas including hips
- Graphite-infused adaptive foam draws heat away from body
- Ceramic gel beads in foam offer soft support without creating a “sinking” feeling
A good mattress is a worthwhile investment, but it’s possible to find a great one, like this Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress, for less than $1,000. Crafted with two layers of Tuft & Needle’s proprietary adaptive foam, this mattress was specifically designed to help relieve sensitive areas, including the hips and shoulders, and strikes just the right balance between cushy and supportive, without that “sinking” feeling. A strong foam base provides a sturdy platform for the ceramic gel-infused middle foam layer, which offers a soft (but not too soft!) feel. On the top, an adaptive foam layer molds itself to the contours of your body, helping to alleviate any pressure you might be feeling.
Hot sleepers will find relief from night sweats, thanks to the heat-wicking graphite and cooling gel-infused adaptive foam, which draws heat away from your body for added comfort. Try it out for 100 nights to see if it’s the right fit for you, and if you love it, take comfort in the fact that it comes with a 10-year warranty.
Happy customer: “Ok this mattress is so comfortable! And they aren’t joking about it keeping you cool! … I am a side sleeper with hip issues and this bed is super supportive and soft … First time in 8 years that I woke up with no body pain or back pain! Seriously amazing mattress!”
Why we like it:
- Made with 100 percent natural latex
- Available in 3 height options
- 25-year warranty
Some people prefer a “springier” mattress as opposed to a more conforming foam one, and if that sounds like you, a latex mattress is a great option. We love this Natural Bliss mattress from PlushBeds, which is made with 100 percent natural, chemical-free latex to give you that weightless, “sleeping on clouds” feeling. According to PlushBeds, this mattress is often recommended by chiropractors and orthopedic specialists due to its “buoyant feeling that gently cradles the pressure points of your body, which helps to relieve aches and pains and promote deep sleep.” There are two key latex components to the Natural Bliss mattress: the natural Talalay latex comfort layer, which offers pressure relief, and the organic Arpico support core, which helps alleviate aches and pains while promoting proper spinal alignment.
Both layers come encased in a soft, breathable organic cotton cover, which provides a cool, crisp feeling on stuffy nights. Choose from medium and medium-firm options, as well as six, eight, and 10-inch heights. Bonus: you’ll get a free sheet set with any mattress purchase, and PlushBeds is so confident about the quality of their products that their mattresses come with an impressive 25-year warranty.
Happy customer: “Have finally found the best mattress we have ever had. We are in our mid-sixties so have tried many. It wasn’t a matter of even getting used to it. Was great sleep from [the] first night! Recommended to my sister and she purchased and loves hers, too.”
Why we like it:
- 50 firmness levels
- Available in an Upper-Flex option
- 25-year warranty
Not only does this Solaire mattress from Saatva look chic, it’s also the most versatile on our list. Composed of six layers — including a back-supporting Talalay latex layer and contouring gel-infused memory foam — this luxurious mattress comes with a remote control equipped with a whopping 50 firmness settings for superior personalized comfort (Dr. Ghassemi recommends firmer for lower back pain). An organic cotton pillow top provides soft cushioning (we love its sleek organic gold trim), while vulcanized air chambers towards the base of the mattress offer uniform support for your entire body. Best of all? Each side of this mattress comes with its own remote, so if you and your sleep partner have different preferences, you’ll be able to adjust to your individual needs. For even more customization, the Solaire is available in an Upper-Flex model (additional $600), which allows you to adjust each side to a different height. For either option, Saatva also sells an adjustable base (from $1,399 for Queen), so you can elevate any part of the bed you’d like.
Happy customer: “I wish I had purchased this bed a long time ago … I thought I would need hip replacement just two months ago. In less than a week with this bed, all hip pain is gone, as well as back pain. Same with my husband. Please consider, and don’t wait over a year to decide like I did.”
Why we like it:
- Ideal for side sleepers
- Cooling-gel foam keeps you from feeling too hot at night
- Multiple foam and coil layers provide support while adapting to all body types
The Bear Hybrid Mattress is popular among side sleepers, so if that’s you, read on! It comes in at a 6.1 on the firmness scale, just a tad firmer than medium, which falls into what Bear refers to as, “The Sweet Spot” (or, the range of softness that 80 percent of people prefer). Made up of four foam layers, as well as an impressive coil system, this hybrid mattress adapts to all body types to provide a comfortable night’s sleep free of aches and pains. The cooling-gel foam layer at the top keeps things buoyant and refreshing, while the premium comfort foam and responsive transition foam layers offer breathability and relief for your pressure points. Finally, the edge coil system promotes improved alignment, with less chance of roll-off around the perimeter. If you love this mattress following the 100-night trial, your purchase is protected by a 20-year warranty for peace of mind.
Happy customer: “Back relief—finally! I’m super glad I chose this mattress … I’ve had chronic lower back issues that have been worsened by previous “fancy” mattresses, but since I got the Bear Hybrid (almost 2 months ago), I’ve noticed a big improvement. I think the level of firmness is just right for me, and my back stays comfortably aligned while sleeping on my side. My black lab is also a pretty big fan and has taken to sleeping like a person with her head on the (super comfy!) pillows. All in all, I don’t think you can go wrong with this mattress or the standard pillows.”
