Melting Crayons on Pumpkins Is the Easiest Way to Create an Adorable, No-Carve Craft

Tags:

Pumpkin decorations are one of the best crafts we look forward to every fall. There’s no need to wait for Halloween to set them out on your porch as soon as the leaves start to turn. That’s especially true when it comes to the beautiful melted crayons on pumpkin. This Pinterest favorite is not only visually stunning, but also oh-so easy to create with your kids! When it comes to easy DIY halloween decorations, these take the cake, considering they call for only a few supplies you already have in your house. Yes, they’re that scary-simple.

When we tested it out, we made one crayon pumpkin with a selection of rainbow hues and another with the whole range of creepier Halloween colors, like purple, green, orange, and black. Let your family’s imaginations run wild — and be sure to get even the littlest helping hands involved, too. Since there’s no carving, it’s a fun way for even the youngest kids in the family to get excited about and involved in decorating. After all, whether it’s a night of trick-or-treating or a big spooky bash, it’s always better to have everyone chip in.

Just make sure to keep an eye on the smaller ones while they hold the hair dryer. You don’t want them to get their hands in the crayon as its melting! Luckily, it dries almost immediately, so you don’t have much to worry about there being a big mess. Check out all the steps for this crayon pumpkin craft below!

Supplies

  • Crayons
  • Tacky glue
  • Hair dryer
  • Pumpkin

We suggest stocking up with two 24-count boxes of crayons for one medium-sized pumpkin. Add your crayon count up or down depending on the size of your pumpkin and the color scheme you have in mind. For example, if you want to do an array of blue hues, you might need more boxes, since so few blue crayons come in each box.

Directions

  1. Choose your color scheme and pull out the crayons that you’ll need to create it. Peel the labels off those crayons and snap them in half through the middle.
  2. Gently glue the crayon halves to the top of the pumpkin in a ring around the stem. (We suggest finding a pumpkin with a bendy stem so you can get the hair dryer closer to the middle of the pumpkin.) Let the glue set before continuing.
  3. Lay down newspaper or some sort of tarp to protect your table — a little bit of wax will fly! — and set the pumpkin you’re using in the middle of it.
  4. Turn the hair dryer on low and start warming the crayons by holding it straight above them. This will reduce the amount of splatter you have.
  5. Keep moving the dryer until all the crayons are melted and the wax is dripping down the sides of the pumpkin. There shouldn’t be much of a puddle of wax at the top of the gourd.
  6. If you want drips that won’t break off, point the hair dryer at the sides of the pumpkin, nudging the drips back toward the skin of the pumpkin, where they can flatten out. Continue until they’re all plastered against the sides.
  7. Let your pumpkin sit until the wax re-hardens, then set out wherever you’d like as decoration.

That’s it!
