As women get older, maintaining well-being becomes increasingly paramount and may require supplements. A balanced diet and regular exercise are fundamental in maintaining health and stamina, but some women over 50 may need additional support to close the gaps. Below, we’ll talk about the supplements older women may need to start taking later in life, plus the supplements to be avoided at this stage. Do women over 50 need to take supplements?

In most cases, dietary supplements are a good thing. They can help you get the daily recommended dose of a particular vitamin or mineral. But in some cases, taking supplements can have adverse effects. That’s why it’s always important to consult with your doctor before adding any kind of supplement to your routine.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025 has recommendations about the amount of vitamins and minerals that are safe for women. For instance, women over 50 should have 2.4 micrograms of Vitamin B12 daily, but those taking medication for acid reflux might need a different form of the vitamin. Other supplement recommendations include:

  • Calcium: 1,200 milligrams (mg) daily
  • Vitamin D: 600 IU International Units (IU) for women age 51 to 70; 800 IU for those over 70
  • Vitamin B6: 1.5 mg daily

What supplements should women over 50 avoid?

Taking too much of any vitamin or mineral can be dangerous regardless of your age. Most of the time, the recommended vitamins and minerals we need come from food, but some people might require supplements to supplement the vitamins or minerals they aren’t getting on a daily basis.

There are, however, some supplements most older women don’t need, like iron. Mayo Clinic’s Dr. Richa Sood says the majority of postmenopausal women who are healthy and eat an iron-rich diet don’t need iron supplements. Taking more iron could lead to an excess or buildup in the b,ody which can cause damage to the liver and joints.

Always check with your doctor or dietitian to talk about whether you need to supplement your diet.
