The Best Toothpastes for Keeping Your Teeth Sparkly White
It’s pretty safe to say that we all want whiter teeth. While there are several natural tricks you can try for improving your smile, chances are, at some point, you’ll also want to start brushing with a whitening toothpaste. Unfortunately, many of the options on the market today contain abrasive ingredients that can actually be damaging to our pearly whites and should be used with caution.
The best whitening toothpastes, while not always available at your local supermarket, will get the job done with non-abrasive enzymes. Keep reading to find out which ones made our list — and where to find them.
What are the best whitening toothpastes?
When you’re trying to figure out what type of whitening toothpaste to buy, you’ll want to take its ingredients and labels into account. A 2014 study found that “whitening toothpaste with abrasive action” and those that use enzymes, which naturally occur in saliva, are both “equally effective in removal of extrinsic stains” — but it’s the latter type that is the safest.
Whats more, according to the research, those icky harsh chemicals aren’t actually whitening your enamel, but removing stains from plaque to give you the appearance of a whiter smile. Low abrasive toothpastes, by comparison, may take longer to see results (between four to six weeks, but who’s counting?), but are every bit as efficient when it comes to stain removal, getting rid of “considerably more tooth [stains]” than regular toothpaste would.
If you must use a high abrasive toothpaste to get teeth white in a hurry, researchers suggest discontinuing use after four weeks to avoid dental damage.
In addition to these guidelines, there are several other factors to consider when choosing a whitening toothpaste. Do you have sensitive teeth? Are they weak? What’s your ideal price point? These factors and more will all play a role in helping you decide which of the many products you should choose for maximum teeth-whitening results.
