Insider secrets every smart CVS shopper should know

CVS coupons are one of the easiest ways to save money, but shopping experts also have some tips and tricks to get the biggest discounts. Try these hacks for your next CVS trip!

Unlock instant savings with a free membership

If you’re not already an ExtraCare rewards member, you’ll want to join the free loyalty rewards program as soon as possible. Not only does it provide access to exclusive coupons, but you’ll get extra perks right away too.

“New CVS customers are often treated to the best introductory deals,” explains Clay Cary, senior trends analyst and finance expert at CouponFollow. “Creating an ExtraCare account and opting into email and text alerts automatically grants access to special welcome offers that can yield significant savings in the early going.”

Stack coupons

While some businesses have a limit of how many coupons you can use, CVS welcomes you to stack as many as you’d like. In fact, combining coupons and deals is one of the best ways to maximize your savings.

“Start with the CVS coupons and weekly offers, and then add in your ExtraCare rewards and ExtraBucks to bring the total down even more,” shares Stephanie Carls, retail insights expert at RetailMeNot. “If you really want to maximize the trip, layer cash back on top. Sites like RetailMeNot often have cash back offers for CVS–sometimes 10 percent or more–which is an easy way to add value to the purchases you’re already making.

It’s also a great idea to utilize manufacturers coupons when possible to get the most bang for your buck.

[Digital] manufacturer coupons need to be sent to your card,” says shopping influencer Annie Paripally (The Spectacular Girl), a shopping expert for CVS. “Examples of popular ones are: $3.00 Off Any L’Oreal cosmetics, $4.00 Off Any Maybelline cosmetics, $3 off 15 Maybelline Makeup, $4.00 Off Any CoverGirl cosmetics.”

To do: Browse the coupons via the CVS website or pharmacy app, then click the “Send to Card” button next to the coupon. This will automatically load it to your ExtraCare card to use during your next purchase.

Break up your purchases

When you need to buy several items from the retailer, consider splitting your haul into two separate transactions. The reason? If you earn store credit through the CVS Extra bucks program, you could use that as “free cash” to buy the other products.

Once you identify which items will earn you ExtraBucks, purchase those items first,” explains Bobby Ghoshal, CEO of Dupe.com, a platform that uses AI to empower shoppers to find lower-priced, similar versions of the most coveted consumer items. “Then, use the new coupons to apply to the remainder of your purchase. This is a great tip for those who don’t frequent CVS too often to ensure they take advantage of these deals on time.”

Save your receipt

Here’s another brilliant tip: The receipt you get after you check out might hold the key to getting even more savings—all you need to do is check the bottom of the paper!

Often, ExtraBucks, bonus offers and future sales print out, and these don’t always show up in the app,” reveals Cary. “One printed coupon can yield several dollars in savings.”

Snag promo codes here

Planning to shop online? You can still save money on the items in your cart with promo codes. (For example, the store is currently offering a Christmas cards coupon code for the holidays!)

CVS sometimes publishes online-only promo codes that match their current in-store sales,” adds Cary. “Online codes in addition to ExtraBucks rewards can be the best option when it comes to buying in bulk or heavier household items.”

You can find these promo codes on the CVS website and app, emails from the retailer or on sites like Rakuten or Groupon.

Consider signing up for Extracare Plus

Though the ExtraCare loyalty program is free to join, there is a paid option available. This other tier offers the same perks as the free membership, but includes some extra benefits.

If you join Extracare plus you pay $5 for a monthly subscription and get $10 in Extrabucks each month plus 20 percent off CVS brand items,” suggests Paripally. “So you basically get free $5 each month—just make sure you use them every month.”

With these helpful hacks, you can get everything you need at CVS without breaking the bank!
