Can wrapping paper be recycled?
If you’re eco-conscious of, the good news is that most of it is recyclable. However, not every kind of wrapping paper is reusable.
“[It has to be] the standard matte or glossy wrapping paper,” says Andrew Hargest. He’s the founder of CompostClub, an NYC-based composting program designed to simplify the composting process for individuals and organizations. Hargest is also the founder of SupplyClub, a B2B sustainable packaging company. Extra details like tape, glitter, or bows are usually plastic and can contaminate the paper recycling stream.
“The most important part is to make sure that paper is only paper,” Hargest adds. To properly recycle wrapping paper, put it out with your traditional recyclables. “If you need to put the wrapping paper in a bag, [use] a paper bag,” Hargest suggests. Don’t forget — the cardboard paper tubes that the wrapping paper comes on is also recyclable!
Here’s to a conscious holiday season!
