If you’ve got $27.44 and live near an Aldi, you can score a grocery haul with the power to enhance weight loss and make meals fun. Plus these finds are super-hearty and perfect for fall. How’d we discover the amazing picks? We taste tested, crunched numbers and got advice from Susie Kundrat, MS, RDN, LDN, founder of Eat Move Groove and a professor emeritus at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. “ALDI is my go-to store,” Kundrat shares. “I’m kinda an ALDI geek.” Same, Susie! So let’s dive into this edition of best Aldi finds for weight loss.

How to make this Aldi haul work for you

For healthy weight loss, Kundrat recommends the “2-2” method. “Build your meals around at least two ounces of protein and two cups of produce,” she suggests. It’ll give you a hit of nutrients to help control hunger and rev metabolism, even if you do nothing else. (Want more structure? There are lots of free weight-loss apps that can guide you to great results.)

We kept 2-2 in mind as we planned our haul. We hope you love it. That said, we also know that not everyone has the same tastes or the same items in stock at their nearest Aldi. So don’t please just use our suggestions as inspiration. The #1 rule of happy weight loss: Only eat food you enjoy! And never go to multiple stores unless you want to.

As for the prices we’re about to share, they’re what we paid in the Chicago metro area. Things may be a bit cheaper or more expensive where you live—but you’ll still be getting great deals.

Best Aldi finds for weight loss

We’re including favorite Aldi finds that work for every meal—plus snack and dessert finds too.

Friendly Farms Plain Nonfat Greek Yogurt, $3.45

Cantaloupe, $1.99

A 32-ounce tub gives you three breakfast-size servings with 26 grams protein each. And you can dress it up with any of Aldi’s famous deals on fruit. In addition to juicy melon, we found sweet plums on sale for 23¢ each. “Greek yogurt is creamy, satisfying and a protein powerhouse,” says Kundrat.

Slimming bonus: Aldi’s Greek yogurt contains live and active cultures, which means it delivers a nice dose of probiotics linked to fat loss. Research published in the Journal of Functional Foods found that overweight adults shed about 4% of their body fat in six weeks if they were served probiotic-rich yogurt with their meals.

Northern Catch Chunk Light Tuna, $1

Bagged Spinach, $1.49

Mix the salad and tuna, divide into two servings and enjoy each over two cups of spinach. You get two insanely easy lunches with about 20 gram protein and 5 grams fiber apiece.

Slimming bonus: A study published in the British Journal of Nutrition found that overweight adults asked to add chickpeas or beans at each sitting didn’t limit portions but still shed just as many pounds as a control group put on a low-calorie diet with no beans or peas. A big reason for the effect: Beans and peas are a jackpot of resistant starch, a fiber-like substance that turbocharges metabolism.

Happy Farms Light Mozzarella String Cheese, $3.15

They come 12 to a pack and have 50 calories each. You also get 6 grams of protein per stick, “which is a nice protein boost,” says Kundrat. We honestly think they taste just like the full-fat version. They’re great with grape tomatoes ($1.99) or any veggie you like.

Slimming bonus: Cheese is a top source of the amino acid leucine, which “sends signals that increase the release of fat from fat cells and increase fat burning in muscles,” per famous dairy researcher Michael Zemel, Ph.D. A 2019 study in the journal Nutrients found that getting multiples servings of low-fat dairy foods a day can double the rate at which postmenopausal women lose belly fat.

Tikka Masala Curry or Butter Chicken Sauce $3.69

Ground Chicken, $3.39

Frozen Riced Cauliflower, $1.69

Cook the chicken then stir in the sauce plus any leftover spinach (it “melts” into the sauce and you won’t even taste it). Enjoy with over your cauliflower rice. To up the fiber content even more, add veggies you have on hand (like onions or peppers). For $2.29, “you could also grab a pouch of Aldi’s heat-and-eat brown rice and quinoa,” adds Kundrat.

Slimming bonus: Indian spices are proven to help lower hunger and rev metabolism. Plus Tufts University scientists have preliminary evidence that compounds in the spice turmeric blocks blood vessels running to fat cells, which leads many fat cells to self-destruct.

Elevation Dark Chocolate Nuts and Sea Salt Bars, $4.59

These treats are Kind Bar dupes that’ll save you about $3.25 per box of six. With just 5 grams of added sugar, they’re salty-sweet perfection at the end of any meal.

Slimming bonus: An MRI study conducted by Harvard scientists found that an anti-hunger, anti-cravings region of the brain  “lights up” after we eat nuts.
