For others, it focuses on nutrition-based practices. One bedtime drink making the rounds on TikTok is ginger, lemon and clove tea. TikTok users claim this warm drink can help with belly fat, inflammation and quick weight loss. We spoke to experts about whether this bedtime hack is actually the weight loss solution people are claiming, or just a warm and comforting nighttime aid.

Lemon-ginger tea with cloves recipe

So, what’s in the trendy drink? Ingredient-wise, it’s made just as it sounds. It combines lemon, fresh ginger and cloves steeped in hot water. You’ll find slight variations in the amount of each ingredient in different videos, but one of the most popular videos, with 42k likes, calls for:

  • Half of one cleaned lemon, thinly-sliced
  • Thumb-sized amount of fresh, cleaned ginger root, either thinly-sliced or grated
  • 1 tsp. of cloves

Does lemon-ginger tea with cloves aid weight loss?

If you’re one of many people looking for easy and effective weight-loss hacks and are interested in trying this tea, you’re probably curious if it actually works.

“There’s no magic drink that melts belly fat overnight but ginger, lemon and clove each have properties that may support weight loss when paired with a healthy lifestyle,” says Uma Darji, MD, a Board Certified Family Medicine Physician.

Here’s how the ingredients may promote weight loss when paired with a healthy diet:

Ginger balances blood sugar

Ginger is known for its anti-inflammatory effects and digestive benefits,” says Dr. Darji. “It may help stabilize blood sugar and reduce appetite by slowing gastric emptying, which would support reduced calorie intake.”

Lemon revs your metabolism

“Lemon offers a bit of vitamin C and can enhance hydration, which is important for metabolism and digestion,” says Dr. Darji. “The acidity may also promote a feeling of fullness, especially in warm beverages.”

Cloves aid digestion

“Cloves might help regulate blood sugar and improve digestion, both of which can indirectly support weight goals,” says Dr. Darji.

While the tea isn’t a complete weight-loss solution on its own, the ingredients work together to support overall health markers that are important for losing weight. “Together, this combo may help reduce bloating, curb cravings and support better digestion which can feel like weight loss, especially in the abdominal area,” says Dr. Darji.

When should you drink lemon-ginger tea with cloves?

In several of TikTok’s most popular videos on the trend, users recommend consuming the tea before bed. But can you still experience weight-loss benefits by having the tea in the morning?

“Drinking this tea before bed isn’t a magic trick for weight loss, but there are a few reasons it might help,” says Dr. Darji. “It may restrain nighttime snacking, especially if consumed as a warm, satisfying ritual. Ginger and cloves can promote digestive comfort, which may support better sleep which indirectly helps with weight management, as poor sleep is linked to weight gain.”

On the other hand, drinking the tea before bed won’t be the most ideal option for everyone’s body. “If someone is sensitive to spicy or acidic ingredients, drinking it right before bed could cause reflux or discomfort,” explains Dr. Darji. “It’s important to listen to your body.”

More health benefits of lemon-ginger tea with cloves

While this soothing brew may indirectly help lower your body weight, it’s packed with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits that improve your health from head to toe. Here’s why it might be worth trying:

It curbs gas and bloating

“This tea could help with improved digestion, as ginger and cloves help reduce gas and bloating,” says Dr. Darji. “Lemon can also stimulate digestive enzymes.”

It boosts your immune system

“It can also help with immune support, as all three ingredients have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties,” notes Dr. Darji. “Ginger and lemon especially are popular during cold and flu season” thanks to their antioxidant properties.

It reduces inflammation

This citrus-and-spice mixture “can lead to reduced inflammation,” reveals Dr. Darji. “Ginger and clove have anti-inflammatory properties that may offer systemic benefits.”

It supports healthy gums

Regularly drinking this brew “can lead to better oral health, as cloves have been used for ages to support gum health and even numb tooth pain, thanks to its natural analgesic properties,” says Dr. Darji.

Ultimately, trading any go-to late night snacks like chocolate or chips for TikTok’s lemon-ginger tea with cloves may help support gradual weight loss over time and, more importantly, be a game-changer for your overall health.
