Too often, new weight-loss fads take over our social media feeds, claiming that just one simple step can power off dozens of pounds in weeks—or even days. One resoundingly popular trend: the coffee loophole diet. The strategy claims that sipping “supercharged” coffee can turn your body into a fat-burning machine. And TikTok videos would have you believe that celebrities such as J-Lo and Oprah are coffee loophole recipe fans. But doctors and nutritionists aren’t quite sold on the brew’s supposed slimming benefits. Keep reading to learn if there’s any science backing the viral trend.

What is the coffee loophole diet recipe?

The coffee loophole diet asserts that adding a handful of ingredients to your coffee can calm food cravings, boost metabolism and fire up fat burning. Those ingredients can differ, but one popular coffee loophole recipe making the rounds is this one from Recipes by Clara:

  • 2 cups black coffee
  • 1 tsp. ceylon cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp. turmeric
  • 1 pinch black pepper
  • 1 tsp. coconut oil

Some coffee loophole proponents advise drinking the brew first thing in the morning, while others recommend downing it within seven seconds of when food cravings strike.

Can the coffee loophole diet help you lose weight?

Here we break down what each ingredient in the coffee loophole diet recipe can—and can’t—do when it comes to supporting weight loss.

Black coffee may increase cortisol

“Coffee itself may help with weight loss because it does slightly increase your metabolism and act as an appetite suppressant,” explains Amy Shapiro MS, RD, CDN, founder and director of Real Nutrition. Indeed, a study in Clinical Nutrition linked drinking 1 to 7 cups of caffeinated coffee weekly to modest reductions in body fat. But higher intakes didn’t confer any added benefits.

What’s more, relying on coffee to combat cravings could interfere with weight loss if you drink it too often. “Doing this regularly can backfire by disrupting hunger cues, increasing cortisol and interfering with sleep, which ultimately makes weight management harder,” warns Angela Downey, MD, family physician and host of the Codependent Doctor podcast.

In fact, research in Endocrine Abstracts confirms that caffeinated coffee can significantly boost levels of cortisol, a stress hormone that may increase belly fat storage. And in an Australian study, consuming the amount of caffeine in one cup of coffee within nine hours of bedtime reduced total sleep. That’s a problem, since experts reporting JAMA Internal Medicine found that skimping on sleep can increase your appetite, causing you to eat up to 270 more calories per day.

Ceylon cinnamon steadies blood sugar

Adding cinnamon to coffee, on the other hand, is something Shapiro does recommend. “It’s been shown to help with weight management and balance blood sugar levels,” she says.

Indeed, a report in the Journal of Future Foods suggests that consuming 1 gram of cinnamon (about ½ tsp.) daily can lower blood glucose within 40 days. And a Harvard analysis found that enjoying a teaspoon of cinnamon a day could lower body fat in as little as 12 weeks. Why choose ceylon cinnamon? It’s lower in coumarin, a compound that can be toxic to the liver, than cassia cinnamon is.

Turmeric and pepper are anti-inflammatory

Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties, notes Wesley Buckle, ND, a naturopathic physician at The Oasis Addiction Treatment Center in Rancho Mirage, California. Plus, black pepper helps enhance turmeric’s absorption. And according to a study in the journal Diabetology & Metabolic Syndrome, diabetics who took 1,500 mg. of curcumin (the compound that gives turmeric its golden color) in capsule form daily lost 2.2 pounds in 10 weeks.

But scientific support for the powdered spices’ ability to spur weight loss is slim. “There’s no direct evidence that turmeric and black pepper can lead to weight loss in humans,” Buckle maintains. Still, chronic inflammation can negatively impact metabolism, he notes. “Therefore, it may support overall weight loss. It’s not a magic remedy, though.”

Coconut oil can up your calorie intake

“Coconut oil contains medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which can slightly increase metabolism in the short term,” says Dr. Downey. “But it’s still a fat-dense calorie source, so too much of it can work against weight goals and trigger digestive issues in some people.”

Buckle agrees: “Coconut oil is quite calorie-dense,” he notes. “Adding it to coffee can increase calories significantly. This could negatively impact weight loss.” And while he grants that the MCTs in coconut oil may boost satiety and energy expenditure to a small extent, he cautions that these effects may not be enough to counteract the oil’s calories.

The bottom line about the coffee loophole diet

There is some evidence supporting the health benefits of the coffee loophole recipe’s ingredients. But the experts we consulted don’t think the brew is the quick fix for weight loss that women have been waiting for. “While the ritual may help some people delay eating or feel full in the short term, it’s not a magic bullet,” says Dr. Downey. “Balance, realistic eating habits, and quality sleep still matter most.”
