‘1000-Lb Sisters’ Star Tammy Slaton Shares Stunning Photos After Skin Removal Surgery
She credits her family and fans for keeping her going during her weight-loss journey
Tammy Slaton, who stars on TLC’s hit reality show 1000-lb Sisters alongside her sister Amy Slaton, is proudly showing off her new figure after her long-awaited skin removal surgery. Tammy lost over 500 pounds after she underwent bariatric surgery in 2022, a transformation that left her with excess skin. But today, she appears to be all smiles after taking the next step in her weight-loss journey.
Tammy Slaton shares new photos after skin removal surgery
In a July 21 TikTok post, Slaton shared several pictures of herself after her skin removal surgery earlier this year. The images range from upper-body selfies with fun filters to a full-body photo.
The photos caught fans’ attention, who chimed in with their support.
“Good for you, Tammy! I’m glad to see you’re healing up well after the skin removal surgery. I know the black bodysuit helps a lot, huh? I’ve lost some weight too and that skin sag ain’t no joke! If you know, you know,” said one TikTok user.
Slaton received an outpouring of support post-skin removal surgery
Other fans in Slaton’s comments pointed out that from watching her weight loss journey online, they believed she had experienced an overall lifestyle transformation.
“The best part of Tammy’s transformation is that most of it is an inside job. She changed her way of living, then the extreme weight loss followed. That’s the secret; there [is] no short cut, and Tammy’s killing this!,” said one TikTok user.
Slaton’s willingness to share her health transformation with the world seemed to not only change her life but also inspire her fans.
“Tammy, I have been watching the series with my boyfriend’s daughter and I am so happy to see this update,” said another TikTok user. “We are on season 5 midway through and you have been this incredible force to be reckoned with. You are an inspiration!!! As well as your family.”
The empathy extended to Slaton during her transformation was clear, with some commenters sharing that her journey made them emotional.
“Brought a tear to my eye,” another user wrote. “It’s been honestly so inspiring and amazing to watch your journey. Never been more prouder of a stranger in my life! Well done Tammy 👏”
Loved ones keep Slaton motivated
In a June appearance on the Creative Chaos podcast, Tammy revealed that she’s currently engaged to her girlfriend Andrea Dalton. (Slaton lost her husband, Caleb Willingham, to “complications of super morbid obesity” in 2023, according to In Touch.) In a TikTok video posted earlier this month, Slaton gave a shoutout to her girlfriend as one of the people who motivate her to continue her health journey.
“So much [h]as changed about me over the years,” Slaton wrote in her TikTok caption. “I couldn’t be more thankful and blessed to have the support and love not only from my fans/besties but my girlfriend and ofc my family this is my thank you for helping me keep going!!”
While Tammy hasn’t made any formal statements about her visible transformation, if fans had any doubts about how high her spirits have been, an even more recent video of her dancing answers that in her caption.
“I absolutely love this song and I know I cannot dance,” Tammy said in her TikTok video caption. “I’m just trying to have fun. They also help spread the message. Forget about depression. Forget about stressing out and start counting your blessings you’re amazing the way you are never forget that.”
Slaton was nervous about her skin removal surgery
Viewers have followed Tammy and Amy Slaton’s weight loss journeys since January 2020. In an episode earlier this year, Tammy shared, “When I was at my heaviest, I was 700-plus pounds. Right now, I’m weighing in at 238.” After losing over 500 pounds, she was finally approved for surgery to remove her excess skin.
“The night before my surgery, I was, like, seriously freaking terrified,” Slaton told People. I was even more nervous about having skin removal surgery than I was for the [sleeve gastrectomy] surgery because they’re actually cutting the whole belly!”
In the June 10 season finale this year, Slaton sees herself for the first time after the procedure.
“Honestly, I’m hoping Tammy sees a new person in that mirror,” said Slaton’s brother Chris Combs in an interview during the episode. “She’s put all this work in to lose all this damn weight, so it’s time for her to feel good about herself.”
While Tammy doesn’t say much at first, her smile says it all. “I was just overwhelmed with excitement,” Slaton told People. “I worked really hard for this, and now it’s here. I’m pretty sure it was noticeable on my face how immediately shocked and then overwhelmed with joy I was.”
In an interview during the episode, Slaton shared how strange it felt getting used to her new reflection. “I’m shocked. Like, I feel so weird,” Slaton said. Tammy, “My bat wings are gone too. And I look down and there’s not nothing there but my lap now. It’s gonna take a little while for me to get used to seeing myself like this.”
Slaton’s skin removal surgery has been a longtime goal
While Slaton may still be adjusting to her post-surgery body, in an interview for a previous episode, she made it clear how excited she was about removing her excess skin. “I’ve come so far on my weight loss journey,” Tammy said. “But now I have even more insecurities about my body because I have so much loose skin.”
“I want skin removed pretty much everywhere on my body. My legs, my stomach, my arms, my face. I wish it was possible to just do all of it at once,” said during a previous season, as reported by People. “I just want to be able to walk around better without losing balance. It’s hard to walk because of the skin. I walk like a daggone penguin. My belly goes this way and I’m going that way.”
What is skin removal surgery?
“The procedure removes excess, sagging skin left behind after significant weight loss,” explains Eric W. Anderson, MD, Plastic Surgeon at Impressions Face + Body. “It’s designed to help people feel more comfortable in their bodies, and is often viewed as the last step in someone’s weight loss journey.”
“A good candidate is someone who has been stable after their weight loss for a minimum of six months, but ideally a year,” says Rukmini Rednam, MD, FACS, a board-certified Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon and Founder at Dr. Rednam Plastic Surgeon.
Weight loss alone can significantly boost your confidence, but when your body doesn’t reflect those changes due to excess skin, surgery can help.
“Skin removal surgery is about so much more than aesthetics and function,” explains Dr. Anderson. “Many of my patients have carried extra weight for most of their lives. After working hard to lose it, they feel healthier and more confident, but the loose skin left behind can feel like a constant reminder of their past. The procedure…helps them align how they look on the outside with how they feel on the inside.”
