Gina Liggio had spent years battling headaches, a constantly runny nose and a loss of taste and smell. Natural vitamins and minerals did little to alleviate her sinus issues, and over-the-counter medications triggered unwanted side effects. It wasn’t until she discovered a low-histamine diet for sinus problems that she finally got the relief she’d been chasing for years. Keep scrolling to see what worked for her, plus more natural ways to alleviate sinus issues.

She was tired of OTC pills and supplements

“Ugh, I can’t taste a thing,” Gina Liggio moaned. When she arrived at a family event, her nose was running so badly her relatives gave her the side-eye—as if she had a contagious cold.

This had become a way of life for Gina. She was going through a box of tissues a week, always had sinus pressure and could barely smell a thing. Sometimes, she even blew her nose between bites of food to increase her tasting ability, but nothing was working.

Gina tried vitamins and supplements, which didn’t make a difference. She also avoided over-the-counter allergy medications because of the side effects. I don’t want to be on medication the rest of my life, Gina worried.

The search for a real solution began

Determined to find something that would actually improve her quality of life, Gina dove into research and learned that hormonal shifts during perimenopause and menopause can trigger an onset of allergies caused by a surprising culprit: histamine foods.

She learned that histamine is a chemical your body produces naturally, but it’s also present in foods such as aged cheese, yogurt, pickled vegetables, soy sauce, some cured meats such as salami and bacon and citrus fruits. (For a full list, simply search “foods high in histamines.”)

Gina also learned that when your body can’t break down the histamine fast enough, it builds up in your bloodstream and tissues, causing sinus congestion, a runny nose, headaches and even skin reactions.

A diet change finally cured her sinus problems

Hopeful that she was onto something, Gina began eliminating high-histamine foods from her diet—and the results were immediate. In just one day, her sinuses were clear for the first time in years.

“The list of foods you have to avoid can seem long, but it’s worth it. I can finally taste and smell in full capacity, so I actually enjoy my favorite foods even more,” Gina smiles. “And feeling like myself again has made it super easy to avoid certain foods. I feel better than ever; I’ll never go back!”

More natural ways to ease sinus issues

Whether you’re suffering from seasonal allergies, sinus infections or other bothers that are triggering sniffling and sneezing, these remedies can help you breathe easy.

Breathe this way

Slowly inhaling through the nose increases the body’s production of nitric oxide—a naturally occurring gas that supports the opening of nasal airway passages and enhances airflow. The result? You’ll be able to breathe more deeply.

Hum a tune

A study published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine found that humming sends gentle vibrations through the sinuses, helping open the tiny passages for easier breathing.

Try Acupressure

Research participants who practiced four weeks of daily acupressure—pressing the sides of the nose and between the eyebrows—reported less nasal congestion and fewer allergy symptoms overall. Give it a try and let us know if it works for you, too!
