If it feels like everyone is talking about fiber lately, you’re not imagining it. This humble nutrient has become a wellness essential, especially for those of us in midlife who want steadier energy, smoother digestion and better blood sugar balance. The good news? Loading up on fiber-rich foods is easier and more delicious than you might think.

Amy Shah, MD, a double-board certified women’s health expert and nutritionist, is a fan of the “fibermaxxing” trend. As she explains, it “simply means prioritizing fiber-rich foods.” Dr. Shah, author of Hormone Havoc, says most of us fall short: “Most women get only about 12 grams of fiber daily, but I find we need around 30 grams per day to notice benefits linked to increased intake, including better digestion, improved blood sugar balance, better brain health and much more.”

That’s why she’s sharing the easiest—and most delicious—ways to increase your fiber intake and reap the health benefits.

Why eating fiber-rich foods matters more after 40

For those of us 40 and older, adding more fiber to our diets does a lot of heavy lifting when it comes to staying healthy. It helps keep things moving, supports a healthy gut microbiome and can ease the blood sugar swings that often show up during perimenopause and menopause. Fiber also helps us feel full longer, a real win when our metabolism starts to slow down and cravings creep in.

The 5 best fiber-rich foods

If your current dietary fiber intake is on the lower side, resist the urge to jump from 12 grams to 30 overnight. “Increase gradually, drink plenty of water and be patient,” Dr. Shah advises. “Small, consistent changes really do add up!”

Add one high-fiber food to a meal today, and you’re already on your way. Here are the fiber-rich foods Dr. Shah recommends to help you hit that 30-gram fiber goal.

Chia seeds

These tiny seeds pack a serious amount of fiber. Just 2 tablespoons stirred into a smoothie, yogurt or oatmeal deliver 10 grams of fiber. “Chia actually has double the fiber of many other nuts and seeds,” Dr. Shah notes, which makes it one of the easiest ways to bump up your daily fiber total without any real effort.

Pears and raspberries

Reach for a pear instead of an apple and you’ll get about 6 to 7 grams of fiber, nearly twice as much. Raspberries are another favorite of Dr. Shah’s, offering about 8 grams per cup. Toss them on cereal, blend them into smoothies or enjoy them straight from the container to help you reach your daily fiber goals.

Beans and lentils

A half-cup serving provides 6 to 8 grams of fiber. Add them to salads, soups or pasta dishes for an easy boost. Dr. Shah’s clever trick: “You can also blend white beans into sauces for extra fiber without changing the flavor.”

Mini avocados

One mini avocado delivers about 6 grams of fiber and makes a delicious topping for whole-grain toast or sourdough. Add a sprinkle of sea salt and you’ve got a satisfying, fiber-rich snack that keeps you full for hours.

Frozen broccoli

Keep a bag in the freezer for busy nights. It’s ready in minutes and provides about 5 grams of fiber per cup. If Brussels sprouts are more your speed, this fiber-rich food offers around 6 grams per cup—roasted with a little olive oil, they’re hard to resist.
