With so much fun in the sun to be had, who has time for an upset stomach this summer? Warm weather can disrupt digestion, as our bodies shift blood flow to our extremities in an effort to keep us cool. Luckily, there are simple steps you can take to soothe everything from nausea to constipation to gas so that you don’t miss a moment.

Upset stomach remedies that work

Whatever’s causing your stomach pain, we’ve rounded up the best natural remedies to soothe your digestive system and keep tummy troubles at bay. Here’s what helps:

Nauseous? Have an ice pop

If you’re feeling queasy, pull an ice pop from the freezer. The refreshing treat doubles as a potent nausea remedy, according to Dutch researchers. They found that giving popsicles to people feeling nauseous after surgery reduced symptoms like stomach upset and vomiting by more than half. Flavors like ginger, lemon and mint are best, according to gastroenterologist Wendi LeBrett, MD (aka Dr. Wendi). “The smell and taste of these flavors help stimulate a different part of the brain to distract from the nausea,” she says.

Tip: No ice pop handy? Sip a cup of naturally ant-inflammatory ginger tea or ginger ale to help settle your stomach and ease symptoms like nausea and vomiting.

Constipated? Eat kiwi

British scientists say the deliciously sweet and adorably fuzzy kiwifruit works as well as psyllium fiber supplements to ease constipation, but without side effects like gas and bloating. Looking at multiple studies, they found snacking on two to three kiwifruits per day for four weeks can help put an end to chronic constipation. “I routinely recommend kiwi to patients,” Dr. Wendi says. She explains that kiwi is special because, in addition to containing water as well as both soluble and insoluble fiber, it gently stimulates the colon to help get things moving.

Tip: If snacking on kiwis isn’t quite doing the trick, consider an over-the-counter supplement like Dulcolax Daily Gut Support Gummies, which has magnesium citrate to support natural gut movement. And don’t forget to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, too!

Diarrhea? Sip rice water

Rice water is exactly what it sounds like—the water left behind when you boil rice—and it’s a helpful home remedy for diarrhea, according to Stanford experts. It contains starches that absorb excess water in your digestive tract to help firm things up. To make it, simply cook your rice as usual and strain the leftover liquid into a glass. Let the rice water cool, then drink 1 cup, repeating two to three times throughout the day as needed to soothe an upset stomach.

Gassy? Strike a yoga pose

You don’t need to know anything about yoga to do the wind-relieving pose which, as the name implies, is designed to instantly release trapped gas. Just lie on your back and hug your knees to your chest. This pose puts gentle pressure on your abdomen to push out painful gas.

Bonus: Prevent an upset stomach at picnics and BBQs

We often don’t realize how quickly the food we pack for a picnic or backyard barbecue can go bad on a hot day. To help prevent food poisoning, keep a thermometer in your cooler and make sure your food stays below 40 degrees Fahrenheit
