A Skin Rash on Your Neck May Be a Sign of Poor Thyroid Health: What Signs and Symptoms to Look For
The thyroid gland is vital for regulating the body's healthy functions and can impact skin quality
While some aspects of our health are more visible than others, many become evident through symptoms that we can see from the outside. That’s why organs such as our hair, skin and nails are so useful for catching potential health conditions. For example, our nails can provide signals about liver, heart and thyroid health. Another outward sign that your thyroid may need medical attention? A skin rash on your neck or elsewhere on your body.
Is a skin rash on the neck a sign of a thyroid problem?
“A skin lesion, which is an area of skin that looks different from the surrounding skin, such as a bump, sore or discoloration on the neck might indicate a thyroid issue, especially if it is associated with symptoms consistent with a possible thyroid disorder,” explains Raj Dasgupta, MD, ABIM Quadruple board-certified physician and Chief Medical Advisor for Fortune Recommends Health.
A skin rash on the neck can be a red flag for thyroid issues, adds Joel Kopelman, MD, FACS, Facial Plastic Surgeon at Kopelman Aesthetic Surgery. “The thyroid gland, which is right there in the neck, plays a significant role in regulating so many aspects of our health, including our skin.”
Autoimmune thyroid conditions like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or Graves’ disease can cause inflammation that leads to skin changes, including rashes, Dr. Kopelman explains. These conditions result from the immune system mistakenly attacking the thyroid, and inflammation can extend to the skin, particularly in the neck area. Thyroid-related rashes most commonly appear in the creases of the skin.
“A rash that could be linked to thyroid problems might look like red, inflamed patches on the neck that are either dry or itchy,” he explains. “In cases related to Graves’ disease, the skin might even appear thickened. Though it more commonly affects the lower legs, it can sometimes extend to other areas like the neck.”

Other skin symptoms of a thyroid condition
In addition to a neck rash, thyroid irregularities can cause various skin-related symptoms. This is because the relationship between the skin and the thyroid is quite significant, Dr. Kopelman notes. Thyroid hormones are crucial for maintaining the skin’s health as they help regulate the turnover of skin cells, function of sweat glands and activity of hair follicles, he explains. When thyroid function is unbalanced as the result of an autoimmune disorder or hypothyroidism, it disrupts these processes, leading to visible changes in the skin.
For example, when the thyroid isn’t producing enough hormones, skin turnover slows down, which can result in dry skin and dull quality . On the other hand, too much thyroid hormone can accelerate these processes, leading to issues like thinning skin or hair loss.
If your thyroid is underactive (and you notice symptoms of hypothyroidism), your skin might become dry, rough and pale, Dr. Kopelman notes. You might also notice that your skin feels thicker or that wounds take longer to heal.
Alternatively, with an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), the skin often feels warm and moist, and you might see an increase in flushing or sweating, Dr. Kopelman says.

When to see a doctor about the level of thyroid hormones, risk factors and skin rashes
Whether it’s a rash on your neck or other skin symptoms that may be caused by a thyroid disease, this is something you should discuss with your doctor. If you notice a persistent rash on your neck, especially if it’s accompanied by other symptoms like unexplained fatigue, weight gain and changes or hair loss, it’s crucial to seek medical attention, Dr. Kopelman urges.
“Thyroid problems can have far-reaching effects on your overall health and catching them early can make a big difference in managing your condition effectively,” he says. “If the rash is getting worse, spreading or if you’re feeling generally unwell, I would recommend seeking medical attention sooner rather than later.”
