Rachel Paxton, 54, stared at her reflection in the mirror and wondered if relief would ever come. Since childhood, Rachel had suffered from seasonal allergy symptoms such as itching and watery eyes, sneezing and sniffles and occasional migraines caused by congestion. Weekly allergy shots and over-the-counter medication were part of her routine from the first sign of spring through late fall.

Then puberty brought another challenge: severe acne on her face, arms, chest and back that persisted into adulthood. Like so many women, Rachel tried everything—from natural remedies to costly dermatologist visits. Nothing helped. In fact, some treatments only made things worse, causing painful cystic acne that left lasting scars.

When she was in her 40s, a family member suggested Rachel might have the same dairy intolerance as many of her relatives. Because she’d never experienced the nausea, cramps or bloating that often accompany lactose intolerance, Rachel had never considered it could be her issue. But desperate for answers, Rachel soon discovered that lactose intolerance can indeed lead to acne, so she eliminated dairy products from her diet. After a few months, her skin finally cleared up.

How do you treat your allergies?

Discovering the benefits of prebiotics

While her acne eventually cleared, her allergy symptoms lingered. Just after her 50th birthday, a friend told Rachel about the Plexus TriPlex prebiotic drink and BioCleanse supplements, which had helped her with bloating and gut health. Curious, Rachel researched prebiotics and how they are known to support gut health and heal leaky gut syndrome.

She learned that normally, the lining of the small intestine acts as a protective filter, letting nutrients in while keeping toxins, bacteria and undigested food contained. But if that barrier weakens, unwanted particles can “leak” into the bloodstream, often triggering inflammation, food intolerances, allergies, skin issues or digestive discomfort

Rachel also learned the difference between probiotics and prebiotics. Probiotics are live “good” bacteria found in foods such as yogurt that add healthy microbes to the gut. Prebiotics, on the other hand, are special fibers that feed the good bacteria already living there—helping them grow stronger and restoring balance.

How prebiotics finally relieved Rachel’s allergies

Wondering if it might ease her lactose intolerance and stop her seasonal allergies, Rachel began drinking a prebiotic beverage each morning and taking supplements that also contain magnesium and vitamin C to support digestion. Six months later, she was amazed: Her allergy symptoms had disappeared and she could enjoy dairy again without developing acne. As a bonus, she shed 35 stubborn pounds.

Now, more than four years later, Rachel is still symptom-free. “I never knew gut health could play such a big role in allergies,” she says. “I’ve never felt healthier or more alive!”

More health benefits of prebiotics

Prebiotics can deliver powerful benefits beyond providing natural allergy relief. Here’s what else they can do:

Ease menopause symptoms

A study published in Post Reproductive Health found that prebiotic foods such as flaxseed support gut microbiome health, which is linked to easing menopausal symptoms like insomnia and hot flashes.

Fight dry eye

The Journal of Clinical Medicine found that people who took a prebiotic and probiotic combination for four months experienced fewer dry eye symptoms and more consistent tear production.

Boost memory

Prebiotics can keep your brain sharp! A study published in Nature Communications found that adults over 60 who took a daily prebiotic supplement scored higher on memory tests after just 12 weeks.
