Vitamin D Burns Belly Fat up to 10 Times Faster—How To Harness the Weight-Loss Benefits
Plus learn what to pair the supplement with to maximize your results
What vitamins are good for losing belly fat? The answer might surprise you. Not long ago, scientists found that women with healthy vitamin D levels have slimmer waists and better health compared to millions of us with low D. Now, a slew of research links vitamin D supplements to less belly fat. One Massachusetts General Hospital study even found extra D helps stimulate belly fat to burn nearly 10 times faster than normal.
Of course, many of us already take D without noticeable results in our body weight or abdominal fat. To find out why, we turned to Seattle-area women’s health expert Emi Hosoda, MD, who says vitamin D was key to her own 100-pound weight loss. Here, Dr. Hosoda explains how vitamin D works and, more importantly, how we can absorb enough of the nutrient for it to work belly-shrinking magic.
Why so many of us are short on vitamin D
Our bodies make vitamin D using sun exposure and cholesterol in our skin, yet up to 80 percent of us still don’t have enough. Blame gloomy weather, sunscreen, aging, darker skin and certain gene variations; all are factors that inhibit D production.
Dietary D options aren’t great either. D-fortified milk has a mere 100 IU per cup, eggs just 11 IU each; only fatty fish (about 350 IU per serving) makes a dent in the 600 to 800 IU of vitamin D experts advise us to get daily.
The bottom line: “Unless you eat a lot of salmon and sardines and spend most of your time outdoors, you probably don’t have enough D,” says Dr. Hosoda.
How to check your vitamin D status
Insurance will often pay for blood work to check your levels of vitamin D; alternatively, CVS makes a $40 home test kit.
Any result from 20 ng/mL to 50 ng/ml is adequate, but Dr. Hosoda finds most women must be close to 50 ng/mL to feel and see a difference in their overall health. As for those who already take a vitamin D supplement but still have stubborn belly fat, there’s a hack for that.
‘Activating’ vitamin D to burn belly fat
Dr. Hosoda says we’ll often hit 50 ng/mL by taking 2,000 IU of vitamin D3 a day. Those starting under 20 ng/mL may need larger initial doses; this must be monitored by a doctor, as too much vitamin D can be toxic.
Here’s a surprise: Studies suggest even large doses of D won’t always get us to the 50 ng/mL mark. The common reason: We don’t get enough vitamin K2 from sources like beef liver and egg yolks.
K2 helps with blood clotting and heart health, plus “it allows vitamin D to be transported to the right places and used properly,” says Dr. Hosoda. Magnesium and fat are also necessary for D utilization, but she finds K2 has the biggest impact. About 100 mcg a day is considered a safe dose.
“I had to take 10,000 units of vitamin D per day plus K2 to get my levels above 50,” says Dr. Hosoda, who, like many of us with weight issues, has a genetic tendency toward low D. “Only then did it help with weight loss.” But once D is up and activated, belly fat starts to disappear at top speed.
How vitamin D melts belly fat
It lowers insulin levels
All the processed junk we eat spikes blood sugar, gradually damaging cells in a way that can keep insulin chronically high. Excess insulin then causes belly fat to pile on.
Luckily, University of Pennsylvania tests show that vitamin D helps improve the function of damaged cells so insulin levels begin to normalize. “Lowering insulin helps with belly fat significantly,” says Dr. Hosoda.
It reduces stress hormones
Vitamin D supplements reduce the production of belly-plumping stress hormones and inflammation that’s secretly putting stress on our systems. “When the body is inflamed, it thinks it’s under attack,” Dr. Hosoda explains. “You release compounds that increase your propensity to hold on to fat, particularly belly fat.”
Once D soothes inflammation, the body releases this extra fat. And as stress drops, so do comfort food cravings, with studies showing D helps us eat 300 fewer calories per day.
It burns fat faster
Very cool research suggests that vitamin D “may improve fat mobilization,” says Dr. Hosoda. That means it tells fat cells to expel stored fat to be burned for energy. There’s also evidence D helps muscles get stronger faster, which further boosts metabolism and fat burning.
These factors help explain a study on identical twins genetically prone to low D: Those given a 2,000 IU daily supplement lost four times more belly fat in eight weeks than their identical sibling given a placebo. Says Dr. Hosoda, “You’ll need to make other healthy lifestyle changes to reach your goals, but optimizing your vitamin D levels can have a huge impact.” (Interested in learning about gut health from Dr. Emi? Vitamin D for belly fat success: Gina lost 2 sizes in 2 months
“I hit menopause at age 52, and everything changed,” recalls Gina Rose Stigman, 64, a retired nurse from California. “My tummy was the first thing I noticed. My hips got wider too.” She tried keto, fasting and countless crash diets. “My weight kept creeping up.”
Gina developed insulin resistance, and she was put on meds for her blood sugar and blood pressure. Finally, a vitamin D check showed her levels were low. Under her doctor’s care, she began taking a 5,000 IU daily supplement plus vitamin K and magnesium; the combo steadily moved her D levels toward 50 ng/ml.
How supplementing kick-started her results
On the internet, she read that D can help with metabolism, prompting her to try slimming down again. “I tracked what I ate, staying in a calorie deficit while getting 100 grams of protein a day.” Gina still ate foods she enjoyed—eggs, salmon, chicken, fruit, veggies, nuts and whole grains—but was able to eat less without feeling hungry or deprived.
She had more energy and happily took up walking, dance classes and pickleball. Gina’s waist soon shrunk by one inch, then another and another. In just two months, she was down two sizes.
Now off all meds, Gina marvels at how quickly her body changed. “Before I got my D to a good level, losing weight was a struggle,” she says. “Vitamin D made it much easier. I’m ready to wear a bikini again!”
How to lose belly fat with vitamin D
To harness vitamin D’s waist-shrinking power, get your D levels tested, then aim for about 50 ng/ml. A 2,000 IU daily dose is common, but ask your doctor what’s best for you. To give your D a boost, add 100 mcg of vitamin K2 and optional magnesium. As D levels improve, it should be easier to eat healthy portions; a free app like LoseIt! can ensure you don’t overeat out of habit.
Important: Vitamin D is fat-soluble, which means we need a little dietary fat in our systems to absorb it. So take your supplement with a meal that contains some healthy fat from sources like avocado, olive oil or salmon.
