Regrow Thinning Eyebrows Naturally With Castor Oil — Here’s How
Hair-loss on the head is a pain in the butt, but hair-loss on your eyebrows can be particularly frustrating. If you’re spending your money on products to fill your eyebrows, we’ve got good news for you. Castor oil, a cheap and all-natural remedy, is here to save the day.
Castor oil is a pale-yellow oil derived from the beans of the castor tree, which grow natively in the Mediterranean, Eastern Africa, India, and other areas with tropical climates. The oil has been used traditionally for many centuries. It has been taken internally as a laxative and labor-inducer, and externally to heal infections, moisturize skin, and treat issues like dandruff. It’s a fairly thick oil with a sticky feel, but even with its gooey texture, its hair growth benefits make it worth trying.
Castor oil has also been used traditionally for hair growth. While there isn’t much research on castor oil specifically, there have been studies which show that ricinoleic acid — the chemical compound which makes up about 90 percent of castor oil — helps to regrow thinning hair. Additionally, experts at Shapes Brow Bar claim, “Castor oil provides good nourishment and circulation of blood. This, in turn, encourages hair growth and boosts up the quality of hair Through regular application of castor oil on [the] brow line, it becomes smooth and defined. The lines of the brow look more dominant and the features of your face look sharp.” Sounds like it’s worth a try, right?
Before you try castor oil, be sure to test a small area on your skin to make sure you’re not allergic, as well a small amount on your brow before saturating your whole brow line with oil. This area is very sensitive, so you’ll want to be sure the oil doesn’t cause any adverse effects.
You can use an old mascara brush that’s been washed clean to apply the oil. First, make sure your face and eyebrows are make-up free and washed clean. Then, take a small amount of castor oil — about a dime-size — in the palm of your hand, and swirl your mascara brush through it. After, comb through a small area of your brow to test. If you find that your skin tolerates the oil, comb the brush through your whole eyebrow. Be careful to avoid the eye area, as castor oil can be very irritating, and be sure to wash immediately if you get any oil in your eyes! If you so desire, you can even massage the oil into your eyebrow so that it soaks into the skin.
Remember, the oil is quite thick, so you won’t want to do this at a time where you’ll be leaving the house. Try applying before bed, so that you can let the oil soak in overnight and work its magic. Rinse with warm water and/or your usual cleanser in the morning.
You can use Jamaican black castor oil or cold pressed castor oil. While it doesn’t necessarily matter which you choose (both have the same ingredient that helps with hair loss), it’s important to choose a high-quality product without any other additives that could be irritating to your skin. Organic versions are a safer choice, as well. Try this one from Sky Organics ($15.95, Amazon).
