Reba McEntire, 69, has always been a powerhouse—on stage, on screen and in style. From her ‘80s big-haired era to her sophisticated red-carpet styles today, her hair has evolved just as much as her legendary career. Whether she’s rocking voluminous curls, bouncy bangs, feathery layers or a chic pixie, the queen of country proves that great hair comes in many forms. That’s why we’re taking a trip down memory lane to revisit the most iconic Reba McEntire hair moments.

What Reba McEntire has said about her hair

When asked about her first real hairstyle, McEntire told First for Women magazine, “When I played basketball as a teen, I’d pull my hair up onto the top of my head into a ponytail. I looked like a peeled onion. It was terrible.”

Another truth McEntire dropped about her locks is that she does have a hair regret like so many of us do too. She told Glamour: “In the early ’80s I got a perm. I have natural curly hair. And so when my hair would be a little past my shoulders with a perm, it was just super tight because if you add a perm to natural curly hair, it looks angry. And it did.”

McEntire’s most notable hair transformation happened in the 1990s (which you’ll see below) when she did a major chop to a pixie cut. In the same Glamour interview, she talked about how liberating it was. “I loved it. It was in ’96 or ’97 when I cut my hair off, and it was freeing, she said. “But you know what? I had to talk to my management and my stylist who did my hair, because it took almost a year for me to talk them into letting me cut my hair. They told me my hair was my image. ‘You got your big hair all jacked up to Jesus. You can’t cut your hair off.’ And I said, ‘Well, it’ll give you something else to talk about.’ And they said, ‘Oh, okay. That’s an idea.’ So we did.”
