Reba McEntire has been a country music icon and TV star for so long that it’s easy to forget about her early years. Reba was raised far from the spotlight on a ranch in Chockie, Oklahoma, and grew up singing with her three siblings. In 1975, at age 20, she recorded her first demo tape and went to Nashville, Tennessee, where she was signed to her first record label. Two years later, in 1977, she released her debut album, and by the ’80s she broke through and the charming redhead ultimately became one of the best-known women in the male-dominated country genre.

Over the course of a nearly 50-year career, Reba has racked up 24 No. 1 hits on Billboard’s country music chart, sold millions of albums and won countless awards. Before she became known as “the Queen of Country,” she was just a young singer with a perfectly ’70s disco cowgirl wardrobe and a dream. Read on for a look back at Reba before she became a household name.
