Eye Makeup In 4 Simple Steps to Make Lashes Look Thicker, Camouflage Saggy Lids and More
Plus, why using an eyelid primer is important
We love using makeup to enhance our features, conceal any flaws and boost our confidence. And one of our favorite features to play up is our eyes. No matter if you prefer a subtle, natural eye look or to go full glam, the possibilities with eye makeup are endless! But we don’t always have time for a super detailed makeup routine. That’s why we turned to makeup artists for the four simple steps it takes to create wow-worthy eye makeup. Read on for the eye-opening tricks!
Eye makeup tutorial perfect for mature skin
These four steps from makeup artists will help your eyes sparkle and shine!
Eye makeup step 1: Prep eyelids
It may seem unnecessary, but using eyelid primer before applying eyeshadow is key, says makeup artist Jamie Greenberg. “A smooth lightweight formula erases creases in the eyelid, creating a base for eyeshadow to adhere to.” Plus, some primers contain firming peptides and hydrating algae extract to smooth out any texture on eyelid skin over time with continued use. Greenberg recommends Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion Anti-Aging, which goes on translucent to work for all skin tones.
Eye makeup step 2: Layer on eye shadow
“Using eye shadows in the same color family but in three different tones, light, medium and dark, creates harmony and gives eyes more depth, so they stand out,” says makeup artist Jami Svay. It’s why most eyeshadow combos are sold as a set of three. Start by applying the lightest shade to the inner corner of the eye and under the arch of the brow. “This will create the illusion of brighter and more lifted-looking eyes,” she says. Then, apply the medium shade across the entire eyelid to create an even base color. Finish by applying the darkest color at the outer corner of the eye and blend into the crease of the eye, the sunken area between the eyelid and the brow bone. “Adding the darkest color here creates a shadow that masks wrinkles or any sagging.” Try: Glossier Monochromes Essential Eyeshadow Trio Palette.
Eye makeup step 3: Apply eyeliner

Want your eyes to pop? Eyeliner to the rescue! Start with the upper lash line—lining it can make your lashes look fuller and your eyes look bigger (yes, please!). Keep it light and close to the lashes, then use an angled eyeliner brush to softly blend. Pro tip: Skip the lower lash line and waterline. According to Svay, it can drag your eyes down and make them look smaller—and we’re all about that lifted, wide-eyed look! (Also, don’t miss the breakdown of eyeliner formulas that’s below.)
Eye makeup step 4: Swipe on mascara
The perfect finishing touch is mascara, of course! To make even the thinnest of lashes look thicker, the way you apply mascara matters. Makeup artist Ashunta Sheriff suggests swiping mascara in three different directions, which evenly coats and separates each eyelash for a fuller-looking flutter. First, place the mascara wand at the base of the lashes and brush up toward the tips. Next, swipe the brush from the tips down to the base. Then, starting at the base, sweep the wand in a horizontal wiggling motion while slowly moving upward to the tips; follow up with a second coat of mascara using the same three steps if needed.
Bonus: Eyeliner formulas 101
Not sure what the different types of formulas are best used for? You’re in the right place! Here is a breakdown to help you pick the one that will define your eyes.
Pencil eyeliner
Creamy pencil eyeliners are known for being the most forgiving (read: you can easily fix any mishaps). Try: L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Last Waterproof Eyeliner.
Liquid eyeliner
Want that sharp, defined eyeliner look? Go for a liquid formula—it’s the MVP for precision. Just keep in mind that it dries fast, so fixing mistakes can get a little tricky! Try: NYX Cosmetics Epic Ink Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner.
Gel eyeliner
Gel eyeliner is the best of both worlds—creamy, blendable and packed with pigment. It gives more definition than a pencil but doesn’t demand the precision of liquid. Bonus: If pots aren’t your thing, gel formulas come in pencil form, too! Try: Essence Stay & Play Gel Eyeliner Pot.
