The Easy, 3-Step Post-Beach Skin Care Routine for Women Over 50 That Makes Skin Look Radiant and Youthful
All you need to know about caring for skin after having some fun in the sun and saltwater
One of the best feelings is how you feel after a day spent at the beach. Maybe your skin looks warm and golden, you’re sunburn-free, your mind is relaxed and at ease and perhaps a good book finished. Plus, you smell of salty ocean water (in a good way) and your hair formed some pretty beach waves after spending time in the water. And while soaking up some vitamin D can leave you feeling calm, cool and confident, it can also leave skin feeling tough and dry. That’s why it’s important to have a post-beach skincare routine, especially if you have mature skin, so that your skin can feel as calm and cool as your demeanor leaving the beach.
What is a post-beach skincare routine?
In short, it’s exactly what it sounds like: a skincare routine you do after spending time at the beach (or by the pool). The main purpose is to rid skin of any dirt, sweat, oil and grime it may have accumulated while basking in the sun, and also to restore hydration as salt water (or chlorine if you were at the pool instead) and heat can deplete skin of moisture.

Since this skincare routine is specifically targeted for post-beach, it should be easy to do and consist of just a few products — nothing elaborate or complicated. And a post beach skin care routine should be able to be done without requiring a sink or bathroom (although a sink is nice to have when it comes to washing your face — but don’t worry, you can cleanse skin without using water if needed!).

Why is a post-beach skincare routine beneficial for women over 50?
As we get older, we lose moisture in our skin, as our natural hyaluronic acid and collagen levels decrease — and being outside in hot temperatures and around salt water can exacerbate this dryness. If you’re over 50, it’s especially important to focus on ways and products to restore this loss of moisture and hydration to keep skin looking and feeling healthy.
Further, sweat and oil (which we tend to see more of during the summer) can clog pores, which can potentially lead to breakouts and blemishes, or inflamed, irritated skin. Ensuring your cleansing skin of this dirt, sweat and oil from the beach will help prevent this breakouts and keep skin happier.

Step 1: Cleanse
You may be thinking, “How can I wash my face if I don’t have any water on hand?” It’s actually quite simple! Thanks to the creation of micellar water, a liquid cleanser that doesn’t need to be rinsed off, you can rid skin of sweat and grime in a flash. Keep a travel-size micellar water in your beach bag, along with some cotton pads; Simply apply a few drops of micellar water on the cotton pad and gently rub on skin to remove any makeup, sunscreen, oil and more. While we typically would recommend a double cleanse for your skincare routine (i.e. following up with a separate cleanser after your micellar water), it’s okay to just use micellar water in a pinch once you’re leaving the beach.
Step 2: Add hydration
If you want to feel like your skin has been immersed in hydration, turn to ol’ reliable hyaluronic acid. Our bodies naturally produce hyaluronic acid, but levels can deplete as we get older. Hyaluronic acid is a powerful humectant, meaning it attracts and holds water in the skin, leading to lots of hydration. We consider it a skincare superhero ingredient, and it can do wonders for mature skin.
Step 3: Moisturize
Last but not least, it’s essential to moisturize your skin after the beach. Slather on a nice, cooling moisturizer to nourish skin, and don’t forget about your neck and chest. Moisturizer will prevent that unwanted feeling of dry, super taught and stiff skin. If you tend to sunburn easily, we recommend looking for a moisturizer with aloe vera to soothe and cool.
