Celebrating Uniqueness and Empowering Kids Through Storytelling: The Mission of Doctor Owlkin and The H.O.M.E. Team
Every child deserves to feel valued, understood, and capable. Lamentably, the world can sometimes be an unkind place for those who stand out due to a particular trait, ability, or challenge. Children who are “different” usually face challenges that can impact their self-esteem and how they interact with others. Dr. Terri Howard-Hughes and Clint Hughes, believing that what makes one different is also what makes them special, created Doctor Owlkin and The H.O.M.E. Team (Help Or Motivate Everybody), a children’s book series that instills understanding and empathy in young readers.
Dr. Terri is a storyteller at heart. She has spent years crafting compelling narratives for various audiences as the founder of Mediaforce Productions, an award-winning video production company. With a background in journalism, video production, and content creation for organisations that help differently abled children, Dr. Terri excels at creating resonating stories.
Clint Hughes is a marketing expert with over 40 years of experience leading successful strategies for major brands. His expertise in engaging audiences across different platforms allows him to craft meaningful messages. The husband and wife combined their skills to bring Doctor Owlkin and The H.O.M.E. Team to life.
The idea for the book series was born from two experiences. One was their time working with an early education program where children with and without differences learn side by side. The creators watched how children who are differently abled thrived while their peers developed empathy. This experience formed their belief that children naturally embrace differences when given the opportunity. The second source of inspiration came from the husband-and-wife’s one-eyed cat. Their furry friend, who found it difficult to jump onto high surfaces, leaped onto the bathroom sink one night, reinforcing that challenges don’t define a person (no one told him he couldn’t, so he did!).

“Kids with a challenge or additional needs find courage when they see themselves in a story,” Dr. Terri explains. “A child with autism might be an incredible artist. A kid in a wheelchair might discover they’re a great basketball player. But they might not know that yet because they don’t have the confidence to explore, to find what they love. That’s what we hope to give these kids through our books—an armor of confidence. We want them to see their strengths.”
Doctor Owlkin and The H.O.M.E. is set in the town of Hopeville. The series, illustrated by Bijan Samaddar, follows a wise old owl, Doctor Owlkin, and his team of compassionate helpers as they explore a world where every animal has something special about them.
Each book introduces a new animal character who struggles with being seen as “different” but discovers that their unique trait is a “superpower”:
- Trouble (Book One) – A lost Bloodhound with extraordinarily long ears discovers her oversized ears give her an amazing ability;
- King Tux (Book Two) – A tiny tuxedo cat with a big personality adopted by a mean farmer plots an escape;
- Pirate (Book Three) – How a lop-eared rabbit with only one eye still sees the best in everybody;
- Goldie (Book Four) – A golden retriever born without a forearm proves she’s capable of being a great support dog;
- Buddy Bear (Book Five) – A bear who isn’t the biggest or fastest but is the friendliest bear in the forest; and
- KC Koala (Book Six) – The only deaf animal in her village develops a way for animals to communicate.
“The lesson is that no matter what anyone looks like, sounds like, or how they experience the world, they have something valuable to contribute,” says Clint. “We also hope these books provide parents a gateway to have meaningful conversations with their children and make them understand that people experience the world in different ways, but at the core, everyone has the same desire—to be loved, respected, and valued.”
Doctor Owlkin and The H.O.M.E. Team’s impact is evident in heartfelt testimonials from parents and educators. An educational consultant says: “This book series is a great bridge to beginning a conversation with your child about the differences in people. It is a priceless opportunity to help children accept the many different types of people they will encounter with care, understanding, and respect.”
Clint shares: “When someone tells us their son approached a classmate in a wheelchair and initiated friendship or when a parent shares their daughter who isn’t differently abled but feels different loves the books because she relates to the characters—these comments keep us going.”
Besides testimonials, research highlights the significance of fostering self-esteem in children’s development—which is the series’ mission. A study shows that developing confidence and self-esteem in children with learning differences is crucial. To ensure this, parents must accept and praise their children for who they are and help them seek positive role models. Children with positive relationships with role models are reported to be linked with elevated self-esteem, improved academic performance, and resilience.
Doctor Owlkin and The H.O.M.E. Team empowers children of all backgrounds to embrace their uniqueness and appreciate the differences in others by showcasing characters who turn their challenges into strengths. The upcoming books in the series will continue this theme. Book Seven will introduce Arby, a dyslexic painted wolf. Meanwhile, Book Eight will explore autism, helping children understand the incredible ways autistic minds work. Soon, all books will be available in Spanish.
