Desert Poppy Paper Co. Blends Heritage, Design and Technical Efficiency in Vibrant Wallpapers Designed to Elevate Interior Spaces

The walls of a home often embody the character of those who reside in them, and one company, situated in the open expanse of Arizona’s desert, has been reimagining the art of adorning walls through its vibrant wallpapers. Desert Poppy Paper Co., run by husband and wife duo Joanie, a veteran interior designer, and Scott O’Connor, has become a symbol of endurance, beauty and care that inform every pattern of wallpaper they produce.

Inspired by the ranch in Arizona where Scott’s mother was raised, the company derives its name from his experiences of travelling to see the desert poppies at the peak of wildflower season. “We’ve got deep roots connected to the ranch and the desert poppies,” he recalls. “Every spring, the family gathered at the ranch to see the annual outbreak of desert wildflowers. Naturally, the desert poppy became a fitting name for the business.”

Founded just two years ago, Desert Poppy Paper Co. is a product of the convergence between Joanie’s experience and Scott’s expertise. “This company really started with me marrying my wife 42 years ago,” he recalls.

After a 40-year interior design career, Joanie decided to pivot her career to pursue a long-held dream. “She had often talked about building a wallpaper company, merging my technical knowledge and her creative expertise, but I always talked her out of it,” Scott recalls. “I believed running a wallpaper company would mean warehousing printed rolls and carrying heavy overhead. But with digital print-to-order technology, all those old arguments disappeared.”

The couple launched Desert Poppy Paper Co. as a print-to-order wallpaper studio, shipping exclusively within the US and Canada. With quality and design at its forefront, the company strives to ensure that everything is commercial grade, printed on either vinyl or thermoplastic olefin (TPO). Standard patterns come in multiple colors and can be further modified to client-specific shades. They also offer murals customized in size and scale to the target wall before going to print. That level of customization, Scott explains, is key to their unique business process.

“We don’t have existing rolls stocked on our shelves. Each order is printed and personalized to the client’s exact needs, allowing us to go beyond standard colors or scales, ensuring every design fits perfectly,” he explains.

“Joanie knows what works in a room and how wallpaper interacts with other elements of the room,” Scott notes. After spending over four decades in the industry, Joanie noticed what was missing in the market. According to her, opening Desert Poppy Paper Co. allowed all those ideas to flow in the form of new, original patterns. Her time spent with interior design clients, curating unique color palettes, balancing textures and curating spatial flow gives her the ability to intuitively understand and deliver what clients are looking for.

At Desert Poppy Paper Co., quality extends beyond materials and into craftsmanship and process. Each mural and pattern begins with an idea from Joanie, which is then handed off to a global network of pattern artists. They see no reason to offer patterns already in the market. Desert Poppy’s designs are original and primarily target a smart casual lifestyle.

“Wallpaper design has its own discipline,” Scott explains. “When you reach the edge of a panel, the next one must align seamlessly. Our pattern artists are trained to make that happen.” Whether it’s whimsical critters, geometric forms, fantasy botanicals or nostalgic western iconography, each pattern, Scott notes, is placed meticulously until the seams disappear and the wall becomes one continuous story.

Technology adds another layer of precision. The company’s website features an interactive scaling tool that allows clients to visualize and adjust mural dimensions before ordering. But Desert Poppy Paper Co. doesn’t stop at automation; Scott personally follows up with clients to confirm their selections. “We want every client to be delighted before anything goes to print, so we do our due diligence,” he says.

Desert Poppy Paper Co. also ships samples directly through a marketplace available only to professional interior designers and architects. He emphasizes that members can receive the samples overnight. “This is an efficient, data-driven channel that aligns with our company’s focus on professional interior design,” he says.

Still, the heart of Desert Poppy Paper Co. lies in something more personal. Aside from its name, the company carries forward the values instilled by Scott’s mother, the late Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman to serve on the US Supreme Court, appointed by President Ronald Reagan. Her western pioneer spirit, much like the resilience of those desert poppies she loved, remains woven into the fabric of the business, quietly dignified, deeply rooted and built to last.

Today, Desert Poppy Paper Co. stands at the intersection of craftsmanship and modernity, upholding a brand that forms a synergy of discipline, creative possibility and technical proficiency, all rooted in the simplicity of elevating a home. “We just want to make people smile, to feel joy when they walk through a home of patterns that inspire them,” Joanie says.
