Falcon Camp Marks 40 Years of Leadership, Learning, and Creating Lasting Memories Under the Helm of Dave Devey and Team
Falcon Camp celebrates an extraordinary milestone this year: 40 years of leadership under camp director and owner Dave Devey. But this celebration isn’t about a single individual—it’s about the culture, community, and commitment that has defined Falcon Camp since its founding.

Although established in 1959, the camp’s values are not rigid relics of the past—taking cues from cultural shifts, parenting trends, and feedback from parents and campers. Whether it’s removing electronics to encourage unplugged growth or tailoring programs for today’s campers, Falcon Camp has earned its reputation as a forward-thinking, well-rounded summer camp experience. Under Dave’s stewardship, Falcon Camp has thrived by striking the perfect balance between honoring its core values and adapting to the evolving needs of campers and families.
Even the leadership team, including Assistant Directors Nici Mahen and Tali Cornblath, constantly assesses how to adapt to changing times. “Life changes and you have to be wise enough to change with it,” says Dave. “Our traditions remain strong, but we innovate to meet new challenges—whether that’s incorporating feedback from parents and campers or responding to shifts in culture and technology.”

The culture of Falcon Camp is rooted in timeless values like kindness, respect, honesty, and a shared sense of community. These principles have been passed down for decades, ensuring that every camper and staff member knows they are part of something larger than themselves. “We intentionally remain small by choice,” Dave explains. “When youngsters walk into a smaller environment, you feel safe more quickly. That sense of safety frees you to learn, explore, and step outside your comfort zone. That’s when real growth happens.”
Falcon Camp’s commitment to quality extends to its award-winning staff development programs, which train teens to take on leadership roles and ensure counselors are prepared to create a fun, inclusive environment. The result is a close-knit team that models the very values campers are there to learn.
One of Falcon Camp’s most remarkable achievements is its multi-generational impact. Third-generation campers are now part of the Falcon family, including Devey’s own granddaughter. The camp’s alumni often bring their children—and sometimes grandchildren—back, drawn by the enduring sense of tradition and community. “It’s something special when I look at a camper and realize I was also their parent’s or grandparent’s counselor,” Dave reflects. “The continuity of those shared experiences, paired with the opportunity to innovate and adapt, is what makes Falcon Camp unique. It’s a privilege to hold that history while continuously striving to improve.”
The camp’s High Flyers award system, which recognizes campers for their enthusiasm, improvement, and skill, is a prime example of this legacy. Names of campers from decades past still adorn the dining hall walls, creating a tangible connection between generations. “My name is still up there from 1964,” Dave says. “Seeing parents and children bond over these shared achievements is part of what makes this place so meaningful.”
Nici even highlights the importance of allowing children to take healthy risks. “Being vulnerable is part of the growth process,” she states. “Kids learn that it’s okay to try, fail, and try again.” One of the key moments for both campers and staff comes during nightly cabin chats, where everyone gathers in a circle to reflect on their day, whether it’s good or bad. These moments foster authentic connections and teach kids to listen, share, and empathize. “It’s about being heard and seen and contributing to others feeling the same,” Nici shares. “That’s where the real magic of camp begins—stripping away activities and building the social skills and connections humans crave.”
While Dave’s leadership has been instrumental, he insists that Falcon Camp’s success is a team effort. The camp’s counselors, many of whom are former campers, embody Falcon’s values and bring their passion and expertise to the program. “Our staff is the foundation of our close-knit camp community,” says Dave. “They’re not just here to run activities; they’re role models who help create a safe, welcoming environment where children can thrive. It’s that sense of community and care that really sets us apart.”
Falcon Camp’s approach to staff training reflects its commitment to quality. Programs like the Counselor-in-Training (CIT) and Leaders-in-Training (LIT) initiative emphasize responsibility, guided discovery, and community. These immersive experiences teach young people to navigate challenges, collaborate effectively, and contribute meaningfully. “We want campers to leave as better people than when they arrived,” Dave says. “It’s not about their background or circumstances. It’s more to give them tools to grow into kind, curious, and respectful individuals who can contribute to the world around them.”
As Falcon Camp celebrates this milestone, it’s clear that its focus remains on the future. For Dave, the ultimate goal is simple: “I want children to leave Falcon Camp with tools that support them in making a positive impact in their own lives and others.” This ethos has guided Falcon Camp for decades and will continue to do so. By holding fast to its core values while embracing change, Falcon Camp remains a place where young people—may it be the campers or staff members joining the team—can build confidence, develop lifelong skills, and create beautiful memories.
