Mansfield Power & Gas Reaffirms Commitment to DEI Through Intentional Leadership

Mansfield Power & Gas (MPG) in Houston, Texas, a family-owned leader in natural gas services, reaffirmed its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) through measurable progress and intentional leadership. These efforts reflect the company’s long-term focus on cultivating a more inclusive workplace that mirrors the diversity of the communities it serves.

Over the past five years, MPG has successfully doubled its representation of minority groups across the organization—an achievement driven by leadership from the top and a culture rooted in accountability and action. In the company’s 2024 performance review cycle, 50% of all promotions went to individuals from underrepresented groups, with over half of them women and the remainder from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds.

“This progress represents more than just numbers—it reflects our belief that diversity drives performance, innovation, and a culture of belonging,” said Tammy Norman, President and COO of MPG. “We’ve found that bringing together a diverse workforce—individuals with unique experiences, backgrounds, and viewpoints—has led to more creative problem-solving and better decision-making.”

As a woman who stepped into the traditionally male-dominated energy sector in the early 1980s, Norman understands the challenges of underrepresentation firsthand and is working proactively to overcome them. Her inclusive leadership style ensures that opportunities and recognition are distributed equitably across the organization. “Diversity is actually raising our expectations because of the benefits that it has proven to bring,” she said.

MPG’s DEI strategy is built on a foundation of core values, underpinned by the tagline, “Always On It – Find a Way, Tell It Straight, and Do It Right.” The company takes a data-driven and action-oriented approach, aligning DEI with broader business goals to foster employee engagement, enhance innovation, and drive better outcomes for clients. In an industry traditionally dominated by male employees in technical roles, MPG’s Gas Scheduling team is 80% female—a reflection of the company’s commitment to creating an environment where talent rises on merit, diverse perspectives are valued, and all employees have equal opportunities to lead and succeed.

The impact of MPG’s inclusive approach is visible throughout the company. Its workforce spans a broad range of ages, cultural backgrounds, and life experiences. The U.S.-based company has also expanded its global reach by sponsoring international professionals, including two emerging leaders from overseas. These efforts reflect MPG’s inclusive philosophy and are a strategic investment in accessing new markets and talent.

MPG has also adapted job roles to align with individual strengths, including creating positions tailored to neurodivergent professionals. These forward-thinking hiring practices have supported a more inclusive workforce and contributed to stronger performance and innovation.

“When you sit in a room and brainstorm with people from different walks of life, the conversation is richer, the ideas are better, and you get to see the world in a whole new way,” Norman explained. “We have clients with very different needs and backgrounds. We want to serve them with the best possible solutions—and to do that—we need people who think in diverse ways and can build a more holistic perspective.”

Norman emphasizes the balance between inclusivity and excellence. “Inclusivity should never come at the expense of ability. We want to do the right thing, but we also want to do it the right way. And the right way is about identifying strengths in individuals, matching them to the right roles, and raising expectations across the board.”

MPG’s DEI efforts are not short-term initiatives—they are core to the company’s values and future. As MPG looks ahead, it remains committed to fostering a workplace where diverse perspectives are welcomed and valued as essential to long-term success. “Over the past five years, MPG has more than doubled in size, both in our business operations and workforce,” Norman noted. “As we continue to grow, we are equally committed to increasing our strength in diversity through intentional hiring, leadership development, and fostering a culture where every voice has the opportunity to make an impact.”
