Fall Books With Bite: 9 New Vampire Novels You Can Really Sink Your Teeth Into

Vampires have always been notoriously difficult to kill, but judging by this season’s Fall books, they’re proving equally impossible to keep off our bookshelves. And the interesting thing is that today’s vampires aren’t content to simply lurk around castles, avoid sunlight and wait for somebody to wander close enough for a quick bite.

In these fall books, they’re falling in love, attending magical academies, raising vampire children, inheriting fashion empires and, in one particularly unusual case, discovering that becoming undead doesn’t necessarily mean leaving your period behind(!). There’s even a return visit from a “psychic vampire” first introduced to readers back in 1897. In other words, vampire fiction has become a pretty big tent.

Romance readers have plenty to choose from, whether it’s the Twilight-tinged YA romance of Hazel Cross’ Roses & Ruin, the four vampire kings of Tessa Hale‘s Crown of Crimson and Crows or Elena Armas making the leap from contemporary romance into the supernatural with Alma Vampires. Horror fans, meanwhile, may find Caitlin Starling’s decidedly unusual Milkteeth more to their liking.

From September through December, we’ve rounded up nine Fall books with very different takes on the creatures of the night, some designed to make you swoon, others causing your skin to crawl, but all proving there’s still plenty of life left in the undead.

‘Roses & Ruin’

Fang facts: Putnam explicitly pitches Roses & Ruin as a paranormal YA romance “for a new generation of Twilight and Vampire Academy readers,” while reviews have also drawn comparisons with The Vampire Diaries. Cross says, “My fascination with vampires goes back to childhood. They show us what we could do if we have forever.” She adds that vampires reveal “who we might become” and which of our good and bad instincts we would indulge.

‘Crown of Crimson and Crows’

Meanwhile, demons are hunting her, war is approaching and her newly awakened power could determine the fate of their world.

Fang facts: Crown of Crimson and Crows launches a new vampire-romance series that is also a spin-off of Hale’s Wolves of Crescent Creek. Sourcebooks summarizes the romantic predicament succinctly: “Four ruthless vampires. Enemies by history. Allies by necessity.” The publisher technically lists September 1 as the publication date but September 8 as the on-sale date, so September 8 is the more useful date for readers.

‘Tethered’

Their unwanted political union becomes a magical bond neither anticipated.

Fang facts: This is Book 1 of The Binding Chronicles. The September release is a 440-page hardcover from Random House Canada. It is a new traditionally published edition of a story that was previously independently published, rather than a completely new 2026 novel.

‘The Blood of the Vampire’

What it’s about: Harriet Brandt is a charming young heiress searching for love who possesses an extraordinary and potentially deadly ability: rather than drinking blood, she unconsciously feeds on the life force of those around her. Fang facts: Originally published in 1897—the same year as Bram Stoker’s Dracula—Florence Marryat’s novel offers a strikingly different conception of the vampire. Penguin describes Harriet as a “biracial, bisexual, feminist psychic vampire.” The new Penguin Classics edition, with an introduction by Rachel Stewart, seeks to reestablish Marryat’s largely overlooked place in Victorian horror.

‘Milkteeth’

Fang facts: Starling, author of The Death of Jane Lawrence, approaches vampirism through the unusual idea of vampire motherhood and child-rearing. Her mythology even has its own terminology: the young vampires Beatrice cares for are “fledglings” and her dependent charges are “nurslings.”

‘With Hearts of Flame’

What it’s about: The fourth Bloodwing Academy novel continues Medra and Blake’s story following the attack on Veilmar. Fang facts: With Hearts of Flame is Book 4 of the Bloodwing Academy series, rather than the beginning of a new vampire story. That makes it the most continuation-dependent of the new-fiction selections in this guide.

‘Alma Vampires’

Romance novelists Ali Hazelwood says “the world is not ready for her vampire era,” while Jenna Levine calls it the “vampire romance of my dreams.”

‘The Vampire’s Concubine’

‘Vampire Menstrual Syndrome’

Fang facts: Gallery describes the book specifically as a “feminist horror-comedy.” Author S.C. Hunter is a scientist as well as a queer writer, with a background in interdisciplinary health research—an interesting bit of context given the novel’s combination of bodily horror, menstruation and vampirism.
