Alex and Eliza’ by Melissa De La Cruz

Alex and Eliza by Melissa De La Cruz
Penguin Books

With battle cries happening in the distance, servants are doing their best to drown out the noise and prepare for the Schuylers’ grand ball, one of New York’s biggest events. The Schuylers are proud to be one of the founding families of America and even prouder of their three daughters, Angelica, Eliza and Peggy. Eliza would rather be helping the colonists than attend the ball, but when she gets word that Alexander Hamilton is in attendance, she can’t contain her excitement. Alex feels lucky to be in such well-regarded company, and when the two meet that night, it’s only the beginning of their epic love story. This is the first installment in a trilogy.

What readers are saying: Perfect for fans of Hamilton and for lovers of history and/or the American Revolution. This fictional account of a famous historic couple was fantastic. I loved Eliza and she was the perfect fiery and independent woman that made Alexander fall in love with her. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.”

The Secret Wife of Aaron Burr’ by Susan Holloway Scott

The Secret Wife of Aaron Burr by Susan Holloway Scott
Kensington

Power, passion, secrets…this saga from bestselling historical author Susan Holloway Scott has it all. The novel follows notorious politician and Revolutionary War hero Aaron Burr and Mary Emmons, the intelligent and strong handmaid to Burr’s wife, Theodosia. But when Theodosia passes away, Mary and Aaron can’t deny their connection. Part fact, part fiction, this tale captivates.

What readers are saying: I’ve read other books about Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton, but this one, written from Mary Emmons’ perspective, was the most intriguing, informative and interesting to read. I recommend this book.”

My Dear Hamilton’ by Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie

My Dear Hamilton by Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie
William Morrow Paperbacks

From the New York Times bestselling authors of America’s First Daughter comes the story of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton. The book follows Eliza as she tries to find herself and her place during the chaos and tragedy of war. Going from a general’s daughter to a founding father’s wife to the last survivor of the Revolution, Eliza’s journey is not one to miss.

What readers are saying: I can’t express enough how much I loved this book! It caught my attention immediately and kept it the entire time. What a fascinating look at the life of an amazing and resilient woman. Of course, some of the things expressed are fictional but they are interwoven with historical events so expertly. It gives such an excellent feel of those times and helped me really see how people literally came together to design and create a new government for a new country. Read this book!”

The Hamilton Affair’ by Elizabeth Cobbs

The Hamilton Affair by Elizabeth Cobbs
Arcade

Elizabeth Cobbs puts her fictional flair on what really happened between Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler. Alexander Hamilton, a bastard orphan raised in the Caribbean, worked his way up and became one of the most memorable figures involved in the American Revolution. And by his side, none other than Elizabeth Schuyler, a wealthy socialite advocating for women. Throughout their struggles, Eliza continued to love him, even after his scandalous affair. This story is a captivating tale of love, heartache, struggle and determination.

What readers are saying: An excellent historical fictional work of a complicated life of a flawed founder. Hamilton has found greater interest in recent years and deservedly so since the nation he helped create has many earmarks of his insightful mind and bold economic blueprint. The book tastefully handles his adulterous liaison and explores the painful betrayal the affair brought to his beloved wife and family. Highly recommend!”

Hamilton and Peggy!: A Revolutionary Friendship’ by L.M. Elliott

Hamilton and Peggy! by L. M Elliott
Katherine Tegen Books

Peggy is the least talked about Schuyler sister, but she gets her chance to shine in L. M. Elliott’s Hamilton and Peggy!: A Revolutionary Friendship. As the youngest of three, Peggy always feels like she’s in the shadow of Angelica and Eliza. However, during the war, she becomes a key figure to loyalists, patriots, spies and others. And when Alexander Hamilton writes to her for help wooing her sister Eliza, Peggy can’t help but say yes. Soon a friendship forms between them, but Alexander is in the same war as her father, and danger is fast approaching for them all.

What readers are saying: By far the best book I’ve read in a long time. This book is so vividly written, it’s so easy to “see” history playing out. I loved seeing a portrait of such an incredible, unknown figure from this time period. Peggy was fierce, loyal, and a force to be reckoned with.”

Love, Theodosia: A Novel of Theodosia Burr and Philip Hamilton’ by Lori Goldstein

Love, Theodosia by Lori Anne Goldstein
Arcade

Fans of Romeo and Juliet will love this enthralling tale. Theodosia Burr is living in New York City after the American Revolution. She’s a scholar and a socialite and is all about making the right connections on behalf of her father—Senator Aaron Burr. Conversely, Philip Hamilton, Alexander Hamilton’s son, is all about charming people for different reasons. When the two first meet, they can’t seem to escape the rivalry of their fathers. But soon enough they must decide whether they want to continue their love story or stop for the sake of family loyalty.

What readers are saying: Lori Goldstein’s book will appeal to readers of historical fiction and historical romance. The author’s dedication to her research, especially the political events and figures of the day, is clear. The tragic romance between Theodosia and Philip is powerfully drawn, but I found myself most interested in the relationship between Theodosia and her father, Aaron Burr, especially leading up to the heart-wrenching climax of their story.”

Burr’ by Gore Vidal

Burr by Gore Vidal
Vintage

If you want to know more about Aaron Burr, the man who killed Alexander Hamilton, this is the book for you. The story spans Burr’s life, chronicling his time as Vice President to Thomas Jefferson as well as life after the infamous duel where he’s newly married. Determined to tell his own story, Burr enlists the help of a young journalist named Charles Schermerhorn Schuyler. The two of them explore Burr’s past as well as the current state of their nation. This is the first in Vidal’s Narratives of Empire series.

What readers are saying: This is a fantastic book. More importantly, the writing is excellent and this serves as a great case study on how to write strong prose. I was blown away by the ending. I will say the memoir sections are far more interesting than the story of Charlie, the journalist who is studying Burr. Overall, though, this is a great book.”

The Girl From Greenwich Street’ by Lauren Willig

The Girl From Greenwich Street by Lauren Willig
William Morrow

In her upcoming novel (out March 4), bestselling author Lauren Willig puts a fictional spin on the famous trial between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. Elma Sands leaves her cousin’s boarding house shortly before Christmas in 1799. And no one knows where she went—until her body shows up in the Manhattan Well. Her family thinks they know who did it and accuse carpenter Levi Weeks of seducing and murdering her. However, Levi’s brother thinks he’s innocent and calls in a favor to Aaron Burr. Not to be upstaged in the public eye, Alexander Hamilton also defends Levi. As the trial and election grow closer, Burr and Hamilton must try to save Levi’s life while trying to destroy each other in the process.

What early readers are saying: “Willig brings to life an unsolved mystery from 1800 New York, where the lawyers on the defense are none other than Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. If you are obsessed with the musical, you know which one, then you will enjoy this legal drama. Willig picks apart the case and imagines a new ending, which you know in the beginning, so you can sit back and enjoy the ride.”
