Carrie Underwood rose to fame after a victorious run on the hit singing competition series American Idol back in 2005, and the blonde southern sweetheart stole hearts with her undeniable talent and charm—which is why many are surprised to learn that the 43-year-old songstress is a horror fanatic! Back in 2020, while promoting her book, Find Your Path, Underwood chatted with Entertainment Weekly to discuss her favorite books, the reads that influenced her most and the spooky stories that have left their mark.
“My fans know this, but the general public probably wouldn’t know that I do like the horror genre quite a bit,” she shared. “I just love things that are imaginative. I love things that could never really happen in real life because I feel like I get a lot of ‘real life’ in my own life and it’s nice to have that escape.”
Here, see some of Carrie Underwood’s favorite reads and recommendations, from terrifying tales to nutrition nonfiction.
‘The Shining’ by Stephen King

A self-proclaimed lover of horror, Carrie shared that she read The Shining multiple times, and its film adaptation is one she loves. “I feel like lots of Stephen King books that have been turned into movies have been really well done and have just been absolutely iconic. Even ones that weren’t necessarily on the scary side like Stand By Me and The Green Mile,” she shared with Entertainment Weekly. “It’s pretty cool that an author like that can write, of course about the strange things, but also write very poignant books. A lot of them are kind of good [versus] evil, which is really cool, and good usually wins.”
In King’s The Shining, Jack Torrance takes on a job caring for the Overlook Hotel during its off season, but as the winter rolls in, strange occurrences take place within the establishment’s walls—and only Jack’s 5-year-old son seems to have a real grasp of what those occurrences are thanks to a unique gift he possesses.
What readers are saying: “The Shining is a masterclass in psychological horror. King expertly weaves tension, isolation, and supernatural dread into a story that keeps readers on edge from start to finish.”
‘Christine’ by Stephen King

Another favorite of Carrie’s is Christine by Stephen King, and so inspired was she by this story that the music video for her 2012 song “Two Black Cadillacs” paid homage to it. Christine tells the story of high schooler Arnie Cunningham who purchases a Plymouth Fury—only to learn the car is possessed by something evil. In a behind-the-scenes video for Carrie’s music video, she revealed how King’s story came into play.
“I really don’t know why I’ve always loved horror movies, but I know why I’ve always loved Stephen King. My mom was such a huge fan. I guarantee you she’s read everything he’s ever written. I would borrow her books and read her books,” she revealed. “Before I knew ‘Two Black Cadillacs’ was going to be a single, I had an idea of a cool movie tie-in, if the car did the killing—because we never say how it happens—a la Christine, the Stephen King movie and book. I just thought that would be a cool little twist to the story.”
Carrie went on to share that she reached out to King for his blessing, and so became the iconic video.
What readers are saying: “This book was way better than I was expecting. Classic King. Coming of age story with some genuinely creepy stuff happening.”
‘Eat Right 4 Your Type’ by Dr. Peter J. D’Adamo and Catherine Whitney

While Carrie Underwood does love horror, another one of her passions is health and fitness, and the musician shared that Eat Right 4 Your Type was a book she found super interesting, sharing that she tends to “geek out over books that talk about diet and exercise or food and crops or how we raise our food.”
This book dives into the ways our blood types influence that way our bodies process foods, exercise, illnesses and beyond.
What readers are saying: “What I loved most is how practical it is. The book gives you a clear framework, specific food lists by blood type, and simple guidance that makes day-to-day eating decisions easier.”
‘The Bible’

Carrie listed The Bible as the book that changed her life, saying “I know it’s not just a book, it’s the living breathing Word of God, and I feel like that’s the book that has changed my life and many, many lives.”
