It’s been more than a year since Rebecca Yarros released Onyx Storm, the third book in her bestselling Empyrean series, and to many readers’ dismay, it ended with a cliffhanger, which left them begging for the fourth book. And now after many, many months, Yarros has finally given the romantasy world an update on when it’s going to be released. Below, we share everything you need to know about the fourth Fourth Wing book.
What is ‘Fourth Wing’ about?
Fourth Wing is a groundbreaking fantasy tale that follows Violet Sorrengail after she enlists in Basmath War College, a school dedicated to teaching people how to ride dragons. Along the way she crosses paths with the handsome—albeit moody and somewhat dangerous—Xaden Riorson, who might just be the most dangerous challenge of all.
As of publication, Fourth Wing has sold more than 2.3 million copies. The series—which includes the books Fourth Wing, Iron Flame and Onyx Storm—has sold more than 12 million copies combined, making it the fastest-selling fantasy series of the 21st century. The series is also one of the most talked-about books on BookTok.
“BookTok is amazing because it’s putting the power back in the readers’ hands,” Yarros told Elle in 2025. “Watching Fourth Wing get picked up by influencers was one of the most surreal experiences of my life. I still don’t think I’ve grasped the immensity of it. At the same time, hoo dog—social media is like living in a hall of mirrors, and no one should look at themselves that often.”

Despite all that success the series did receive a lot of pushback, specifically regarding the spicy scenes featuring Violet and Xaden.
“I always have to laugh. I’m like, ‘Okay, well if you’re more worried about the sex, I understand, but there’s murder. There’s a lot of murder.’” Yarros told Elle. “I would hope that people who are 20 to 25, in that ‘new adult’ age range it’s written for, are having more sex than murders.”
What we know so far about the next book in the ‘Fourth Wing’ series
So far, there haven’t been many updates on the Fourth Wing book 4. Yarros did post on Instagram in March of this year to let readers know: “I’m back writing in the Empyrean world for the foreseeable future. Let’s ride.”
She also wrote the number four on the board, confirming that she will be working on the fourth book, not other stories.
Naturally, fans were ecstatic, commenting, “Rebecca, my nervous system has only JUST recovered! What a time to be a fantasy reader,” and “I need a happy ending or I may die. No, I WILL not recover.”
Currently, Fourth Wing book 4 doesn’t have a plot, release date or title, but based on the ending of Onyx Storm, it will most likely follow Violet trying to reunite with her now-husband Xaden. We also know, according to Yarros, that “someone you love won’t make it in book 4.”

“I think it depends on—I mean, yes, always. But it’s also, who do you love? Everybody loves different characters,” the author explained to Variety, “So it could be someone you don’t love, but someone someone else does. But I think when you’re writing a book that examines war, it’s very important to make sure that people know that losses are real, right?”
Yarros also told the outlet that fans can expect to learn more about Violet’s ability to dream walk, which is her second signet/power, in book four.
“I would say it evolves with her understanding,” the author said.
Will there be more ‘Fourth Wing’ books?
There will reportedly be five books in the Empyrean series, however details on book five are very limited.
