Caution: spoilers ahead
A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) 6—A Court of Splintered Harmony—by Sarah J. Maas released yesterday, and superfans raced through the book in hours and are sharing their thoughts. Some love it, some are upset that it (spoiler alert) ended on a cliffhanger and some are just downright confused. To learn more about how Goodreads are reacting to the novel, keep scrolling!
First, what is ‘ACOTAR’ 6 about?
A Court of Splintered Harmony follows the Inner Circle during the aftermath of the Hybern war. As early as the first chapters, across the continent, Koschei the Deathless is stirring, and he might just be the group’s most formidable foe yet. This novel is the first in The Valkyrie Cycle Movement, which readers were first introduced to in ACOTAR 5, A Court of Silver Flames, and is Maas’ first ACOTAR book in five years.
Following ACOTAR 6, there will be a seventh book—entitled A Court of Forgotten Melody—and book 8—no title has been shared—both of which the author says are all part of the same storyline.

The story is long—divided into a few books. “I like to do parts: part one, part two, part three. By the time I got to the end of part one, it was, like, 400 pages long…so I decided I wasn’t going to approach this project from a traditional format of a book. And what if this story, like what if this book was really long? Like what if it took me more than 1,000 pages to tell the story that needed to be told…What if that took a long time? Like what if that took beyond the constraints of a single volume? And what does that look like? How do I tell that story? And so part one was this huge huge thing,” she said on Alex Cooper’s podcast Call Her Daddy earlier this year.
Maas added, “So it’s basically going to be like three physical volumes but it’s like one thing altogether that like no amount of glue in like any publisher’s factories could ever like hold this. So, it’s meant to be read ideally as one massive massive story as opposed to like a trilogy,”
Fans react to ‘ACOTAR 6’
Even though the book was just released, some fans were able to get copies at midnight and binge-read the entire thing.
One Goodreads user wrote that reading the book was “my favourite kind of night. A new book that I’ve been waiting months for, a bottle of wine, read it cover to cover and let’s not worry about the fact that I need to be functional enough to go to work in a few short hours. No spoilers, I don’t think that’s fair in a review—if you want to know, you’ll read it for yourself, but just know we were left on a cliffhanger.”
Another reader raved, “That’s only 300 pages, I still felt everything! Being reunited with these characters was literally everything to me. I was screaming and crying over seeing everybody again. I felt everything. I was scared of characters at one point. I was so upset for a certain somebody. I was cheering for one of them the whole time they gave their little monologue. And I am so excited for the next one.”
Finally, as with all novels, there are some less-than-stellar reviews. One user said, “The book was just full of filler. It didn’t need to be in this series. Not a single character stood out to me, the plot went round and round until I wanted to give up, everything just felt so surface-level and boring.”
Another said the entire thing felt like it “served nothing…. Maybe it’s just to set the scenes for the next book, but I’m actually so bummed out.”
