Alex Rodriguez—a.k.a. A-Rod—is opening up about his love of reading and his daughters—and it’s surprisingly sweet! In a recent episode of What’s in My Bag (which you can view above), the 50-year-old baseball legend revealed what he’s reading and what he always carries with him that reminds him of his daughters. To learn more, keep reading!
Why the former Yankee always travels with a photo of his daughters
Most people know Rodriguez from his time in the MLB (Major League Baseball). He played for 22 seasons with the Seattle Mariners, the Texas Rangers and the New York Yankees before retiring in 2016. Since then, he’s gone on to become a highly successful businessman and even appeared on the hit ABC show Shark Tank.
According to him, none of that is as important as his daughters—Natasha Alexander Rodriguez, 21, and Ella Alexander Rodriguez, 18—which is why he always carries a photo of them.
“I always travel with a picture of my girls, and yeah, that was my last game I played at Yankee Stadium,” Rodriguez said in the What’s in My Bag video.
Also in his bag? A notebook, but he said he doesn’t use it to journal.
“I always bring a notebook everywhere, because, like, every three years I come up with a decent idea, and I want to make sure that I write it down,” he said. “Then I have my WNBA little notebook, and I just write notes all the time…I know that would sound cool, but I don’t journal.”
Inside Alex Rodriguez’s ‘strange’ reading habits and favorite books
One thing he does do? Read! According to him, he’s “not reading any books right now,” but he does have a few favorites.

“I always like The Four Agreements [by Don Miguel Ruiz]. I love Pat Riley, The Winner Within,” Rodriguez said. “I have a bunch of books that I like, but I just kind of dabble, chapter here, chapter there. I’m kind of a strange reader.”
When he does read, Rodriguez always makes sure to wear his Look Optic Glasses (which are currently on sale for Father’s Day!)
“These are my progressives, and I have a couple here,” he says. “I wear these because, okay, for tonight, for example, one of the things you have to do is you have to keep score, so that means that every pitch you’re basically documenting, and when you’re broadcasting, it’s always a great exercise to document each pitch, so you’re in the flow of the game, and then when that person comes to bat the second or third time, you have the history of what they did, so it’s always good, but these are progressives, that means I can actually watch the game, and then I can look down and can help me read, so it’s really cool.”
Pizza and SoulCycle: Inside A-Rod’s ultimate Father’s Day plan
Since Rodriguez loves his daughters, it makes total sense that he would want his Father’s Day to be perfect.
“I would say the ultimate Father’s Day is to wake up. My girls like to do a workout class, like a SoulCycle, or maybe like a Tracy Anderson. They love that,” he said. “We love Tracy. And then it’s like some type of brunch or something.”
As for what he’s having at the brunch? Rodriguez says he likes egg whites, but that can change depending on “if I’ve worked hard all week, there’s like my one time where I can crush, so I have like egg whites.”

“My cheat meal, I would say pizza, wings, and ice cream,” he continued. “I used to crush Hooters wings. I would destroy them. I have to be honest.”
He also likes coffee at brunch and says he’s just a black coffee guy.
“Nothing on it. Simple,” he said.
