Brunch with Babs Shares Her Must-Have ‘Grandmacore’ Finds at Michaels This Fall (EXCLUSIVE)
Barbara Costello opens up about cozy crafting, calm living and the comfort of doing it yourself
If you look up “Grandmacore” on the internet, chances are you will see a picture of Barbara Costello—a.k.a “Brunch with Babs.” Not only is the internet personally the literal embodiment of the trend, but she’s also a grandma herself, making her the perfect person to bring this trend of coziness and comfort into the world of technology. Woman’s World recently caught up with Babs to discuss this trend as well as why she thinks sewing is an important part of it. Read on to discover what she had to say.
Brunch with Babs talks “Grandmacore”
Grandmacore is defined as something that’s inspired by the traditional grandma lifestyle, whether that be clothes, home decor or cooking. For Babs, her Grandmacore core is sewing, specifically with items that come from Michaels.
“My grandmother was an Italian immigrant and couldn’t read, but she could do anything she put her mind to, and she was a fabulous crocheter. I still have one of her tablecloths. My mother was a fabulous seamstress; she made matching dresses for my sister and me. My college roommate taught me how to knit. I picked up embroidery before my first one was born, and then we moved to Virginia after we had two children. I was pregnant with my third child when I started cross stitching, because cross stitching was huge in the Richmond area and I loved cross stitching. From there, I went to smocking dresses for the girls—I had two girls and two boys. So when I think of grandma’s hand work, the things that we took for granted are coming full circle now, and the millennials and the Gen Zs are discovering this Grandmacore trend. I think it’s because there’s a certain therapeutic benefit,” she told Woman’s World.

“You are making something beautiful and it’s good for your mental health, especially since people are mindlessly scrolling. Your mind is never at rest while you’re scrolling, but sewing brings you to a quiet place where you can be very mindful. That’s much needed and I think the younger generation is discovering that and it’s beautiful.”
Babs also shared that when she sews, she likes to “put my feet up and watch TV.”
Brunch with Babs shares her must have fall finds at Michaels
Over the past few weeks Michaels has brought back the beloved Joann fabric stores into several of their locations worldwide thanks to their Knit & Sew Shop. In doing so they also brought in a bunch of new fabrics, which Babs says is a must have this fall.
“I was a Michaels shopper for years, I’ve got my phone number that gets the points when I go and all that. Then I also shopped at Joann’s. So when they closed, I was kind of upset. And then with Michaels taking over the private label and offering those products in their stores, that was ingenious, because now we all have a landing place,” Babs said.
“I think Halloween costumes would be a wonderful project. There’s nothing like a homemade Halloween costume. It beats anything that you can get online and Michael’s stores are carrying fabric by the yard, so you can go in and they can roll out what you need,” she continued. “You can also start a project now and give it as a gift for Christmas. I mean, the possibilities are endless when you’re talking about knitting, sewing and any handwork.”
Brunch with Babs opens up about her husband Bill

Anyone who’s seen a Brunch With Babs video, has probably seen her husband Bill as well. In fact, Bill himself recently joined in on the social media fun, and Babs said that he could potentially begin to make “grandpacore” a thing.
“He will try anything,” Babs shared. “He only has one post, but he’s working on it. He’s gonna be the trendsetter.”
