For Denzel Washington and his wife, Pauletta Washington, their 40+ year marriage is one for the ages, and their love story began in the very early days of Denzel’s career. How Denzel and Pauletta Washington first met
Before he became known for films like Training Day (2001), The Equalizer (2014), Fences (2016) and countless others, Washington spent his early career throughout the seventies performing in summer stock theater before he made his way to the screen. It was in 1977 when he made his debut in front of the camera in the television movie Wilma, and who else would partake in this film but his soon-to-be wife and fellow actor Pauletta Washington, at the time, Pauletta Pearson.
Though they worked alongside each other on this film, they wouldn’t formally meet until months later when they reconnected at a party hosted by one of their mutual friends. As fate would have it, the next night, Pauletta went to see a play and when the lights rose at intermission, who would be beside her but Denzel.
By 1983, the couple said “I do,” but it wasn’t until Denzel asked Pauletta for her hand three times before she said yes, the couple recalled to Access Online. Luckily, when the timing was right, the couple made things official, and since then, they’ve been happily married ever since. “I’ll never leave my wife,” Denzel told Barbara Walters in a 1992 interview. “I may give her reason to leave me, but I’ll never leave her. I won’t leave her. We’ve known each other too long, we’ve been through too much.”
And Denzel continues to sing his wife’s praises decades later! In a 2017 interview with Extra TV at the SAG Awards, when asked what their secret is to a successful marriage, Pauletta shared that “I think it’s our fate. Nothing’s magic, it’s work.” Denzel went on to say, “I got a good woman, that’s the first thing, and you know, you just keep working at it.”

After saying “I do” 41 years ago, Denzel and Pauletta welcomed four children, all of whom have followed in their parents’ footsteps! John David is an actor and can be seen in projects like 2018’s BlacKkKlansman and 2021’s Malcom & Marie. Katia Washington is a producer, Malcolm Washington works as both a director and producer and Olivia Washington is also an actress, seen in films like 2021’s The Little Things.
“When I think of what I’m proudest of,” Denzel told Esquire earlier this year, “anything I’ve accomplished doesn’t even come to mind. It’s our children: They’re good people. They know right from wrong.” It’s safe to say that this beloved Hollywood couple has done something right, and we wish them a lifetime of continued happiness and prosperity!
