‘We Maintained Being a Family’: Demi Moore on Co-Parenting and Life After Bruce Willis Split
‘The Substance’ actress also revealed what revelation helped her discover her parenting style
Award-winning actress Demi Moore is opening up about her 13-year marriage to actor Bruce Willis, and the friendship that transpired between them after. During her World’s Most Beautiful cover shoot for People magazine, the mother of three said they have “maintained being a family in various forms,” because their “foundation of making our children our priority has never wavered.” We have Moore’s entire statement, including details on where the Moore-Wills family is at now following the birth of Rumer Willis’s daughter in April 2023.
Demi Moore reflects on her marriage to Bruce Willis
Moore, 62, and Bruce, 70, were married from 1987 to 20000, and during that time, they welcomed three kids together—Rumer Willis, Scout LaRue Willis and Tallulah Willis.
“For many, many years, that was really about not wanting my kids to ever experience certain things that I had,” Moore told People about her parenting style in response to them asking about her relationship with her own mother. “It created a real drive in me to want to look for opportunities to transform and become the best version of myself. One of the beautiful revelations was: How could I expect my children to have compassion for me if I didn’t have compassion for my own mother?”
“I think I had a pendulum swing where I didn’t want to burden my children, I never let them see me emotional. I really see now how important that is for our children to see us sad and see that we walk through it and get to the other side. It’s okay to be angry and move through it. There’s a lot I’ve learned and some I wish I had figured out sooner, but I also trust that it all happens in its right time.”
Throughout the years, Moore has remained close with her children and their father, Bruce, saying, “Regardless of what the outside relationship has been, we have maintained being a family in various forms. The foundation of making our children our priority has never wavered.”
And they have. In April 2023, Moore and Bruce became grandparents for the first time when their daughter Rumer gave birth to Louetta Isley Thomas Willis.
“It was really incredible,” Moore said of the moment. “Rumer was at Scout’s birth; Scout and Rumer were at Tallulah’s birth. Rumer had a home birth, and there was a moment when I thought, “Oh boy, I don’t know if she’s going to make it,” like she has a different pain threshold than I do. To just see her move into her own power and focus, it was a really extraordinary, beautiful moment.”
The actress also shared that Louetta calls her “Yaya,” which is Greek for grandmother.
A look back at Demi Moore and Bruce Willis’s love story
Moore and Bruce met in July 1987 at a screening of Stakeout, which starred her then fiancé, Emilio Estevez. Shortly after, the actress called things off with Estevez and started dating Bruce.
After just four months, the two tied the knot in November 1987. Less than a year later, they welcomed their first child,Rumer, on August 1988. Their other two children,—Scout and Tallulah, were born in 1991 and 1994.
“Pregnancy agrees with me,” the actress told Vanity Fair in August 1991. “I feel comfortable.”
Four years after welcoming their third and final child, though, Moore and Bruce split up before finalizing their divorce in 2000. The reason was reportedly that theywere too busy working to spend time with one another.
Even so, Moore and Bruce have remained very good friends since their split, and have often been seen out and about together. The actress has also been very present and helpful with the actor’s battle with aphasia.
“Given the givens, he’s in a very stable place at the moment,” Moore said in December 2024, per CNN. “And I’ve shared this before, but I really mean this so sincerely: It’s so important for anybody who’s dealing with this to really meet them where they’re at.”
Neither party is married, but they can be seen in various Instagram posts together hanging out with their kids and grandchild.
