Key Takeaways

  • Dryness, humidity and hormonal changes can all contribute to frizzy, unruly hair.
  • Microfiber towels, smoothing serums and gentler styling habits help fix frizz fast.
  • Deep conditioning, argan oil and silk pillowcases help keep hair smoother over time.

If your hair puffs up the second you step outside or refuses to lie smooth no matter how carefully you brush, you are in very good company. Learning how to fix frizzy hair can feel like a daily guessing game, especially as hormones shift and strands get drier with age. The good news: A few targeted tweaks can calm the chaos faster than you’d think.

What causes frizzy hair in the first place?

Frizz almost always traces back to one culprit—moisture, or the lack of it. “When your hair gets frizzy, oftentimes it’s because it is already extremely dry, so then your hair tries looking for added moisture in the atmosphere,” explains hairstylist Nick Arrojo. “If your hair has enough moisture in it to begin with, then it won’t swell up looking for extra moisture from the environment you’re in.”

Board-certified trichologist Helen Reavey, founder of Act+Acre, explains what’s happening at the strand level: “When hair is dry, the outer layer (cuticle) lifts, allowing moisture to pass through and swell the hair strands, causing frizz. Humidity can exacerbate frizz by increasing the amount of moisture in the air that interacts with the hair, especially for those with high porosity hair.”

Age matters too. LA-based hairstylist Matilde Campos says that as hair grays, the reduction in melanocytes “removes the smoothness and moisture from your hair, causing dryness.” During perimenopause, declining estrogen means your scalp produces less natural oil, leaving strands rougher and more brittle, according to consultant dermatologist Aamna Adel, MBBS.

3 everyday habits that contribute to frizz

Anthony De Los Santos, owner of DOLO New York Hair Studio, points to three big offenders: over-washing, excessive friction and heat styling. Sulfates, silicones, alcohols and heavy fragrances in shampoo strip moisture right out of your strands. Celebrity hairstylist Gregg Giannillo adds that “towel drying the hair by rubbing it too hard and disrupting the curl pattern enhances frizz.”

Even brushing can backfire. The haircare experts at John Freida suggest brushing only when hair is tangled—and applying a little anti-frizz product first so your strands aren’t bone-dry when the bristles hit them.

How to fix frizzy hair fast

For silky-smooth hair in minutes, give these pro tips a try:

Swap your towel

A microfiber towel dries wet hair faster and with far less frizz-forming friction. Reavey also recommends finishing your shower with a cool rinse to help seal the hair’s cuticle, and keeping your hands out of your hair afterward.

Try an apple cider vinegar rinse

Amerah Underwood, co-owner and stylist at UMI Salon in New York City, suggests mixing a tablespoon of ACV into a cup of water and pouring it over hair after shampooing. “Hormonal shifts make the hair cuticle rougher and more open, and the low pH snaps it flat so hair feels silkier and reflects more light,” she says. Follow with conditioner as usual.

Press frizz down—don’t brush it

“Don’t keep brushing frizz,” says New York–based celebrity hairstylist Antonio Velotta. “Press it down. I like to put a tiny amount of smoothing serum gently on the hair, blow dry it in and use a flatiron just at the frizzy parts (especially at the roots.)”

Use a heat protectant

The right styling products, like Ceremonia Guava Rescue UV and Heat Protectant Spray, create a barrier between hot tools like a blow dryer or flat iron and your strands. Reavey recommends using heat sparingly to begin with to help keep your strands frizz-free.

How to prevent frizz from returning

For smoother, more manageable hair going forward, here’s what our experts recommend:

  • Deep condition: A weekly deep conditioning mask restores moisture to dry hair. Formulas rich in glycerin and shea butter nourish damaged ends.
  • Reach for argan oil: Gray hair is naturally drier and more porous, so it craves extra moisture. A daily drop of argan oil worked through damp or dry strands helps, says Eliza Pineda, in-house hair expert for Mayraki Professional.
  • Switch to silk. To help get rid of frizz while you sleep, Pineda recommends using a silk pillowcase to help your hair retain its natural oils (this prevents them from getting absorbed by a cotton pillowcase). One we like: Purple Stretch Silk Pillowcase.
  • Apply cream to curls: Campos loves Kevin Murphy Killer Curls Cream. “This lightweight product can change your life,” she says. “It is easy to comb through and it does not become sticky or stiff.”

The bottom line on how to fix frizzy hair

Fixing frizzy hair comes down to one simple principle: Restore the moisture your strands are missing. With the right products, gentler habits and a few expert tricks, smooth, shiny hair is within reach—no matter your age, hair type or what the weather is doing outside.
