If Dermot Mulroney’s face looks familiar, that’s because he’s stolen hearts across nearly every genre for decades. Maybe you swooned over him opposite Julia Roberts in My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997), rooted for him through his Shameless arc, felt all the feels during The Family Stone (2005), or got hooked on his Chicago Fire role. And this summer? You couldn’t stop watching him as the complex Jed in Netflix’s The Hunting Wives. Now, the 62-year-old is saddling up once again—this time for the western drama Long Shadows, hitting theaters November 7. In an exclusive chat with Woman’s World, Dermot opened up about everything from his passion for westerns to that My Best Friend’s Wedding sequel we’re all hoping for.

Dermot Mulroney saddles up for ‘Long Shadows’

Long Shadows, Dermot’s upcoming film, follows the story of a young man determined to avenge the death of his parents. Guiding him along his journey is Mulroney’s character of Dallas Garrett, a former outlaw who “comes into the life of the lead young man, played beautifully by Blaine Maye, who’s bent on revenge, and I helped steer him through how to channel that.”

This certainly isn’t the actor’s first foray in the western genre (who can forget Young Guns?!), but it’s certainly a special one. Describing the film as an “original classic,” Dermot explains that it’s the story’s fresh angle, great narrative and intriguing twists that set it apart, but the “great western cinematography” will remind viewers of the classics they love.

When it comes to westerns as a whole, Mulroney calls them his “favorite genre to film.” He continued, “Some of my best memories are from western sets. It’s such a specialty art form in its own right within the film industry. I just love working with animals and antique equipment and everything in between. It’s a one of a kind filmmaking experience.”

Dermot Mulroney talks western renaissance and Taylor Sheridan universe

Of course, westerns aren’t exactly new territory—but Dermot’s thrilled about the genre’s big comeback moment. With hits like Yellowstone and Taylor Sheridan’s ever-expanding universe bringing cowboy stories back into our living rooms, it’s an exciting time—and it’s one that he’s “so happy” to see unfold. It’s easy to picture the actor being a perfect fit in one of these stories, and according to Dermot, he’s a big fan of what’s been done thus far. “It seems like they’re making real, authentic, full fabric American stories.” As for whether or not he could see himself taking part in one of these vibrant tales, the actor was fully game. “Count me in any time. That is my favorite genre, and I love the feel of some of those shows.”

Over the summer, the world was glued to their screens thanks to the release of The Hunting Wives, and in the series, Dermot brought to life the character of Jed, Margo’s wealthy, oil tycoon husband with political aspirations. “It’s so wonderful to see how the show came to life the way it did.” He continued, “I haven’t seen a script for season 2, but we’re getting after it right away so we can further explore some more of Jed Banks’ b–ls–t and maybe some more of his darker side. So I know there’s a lot in store for even my character alone, but can you imagine what people are out there cooking up for what’s going to happen in season 2? I can’t wait to find out and bring it out to the world.”

Mulroney stole hearts as Michael in My Best Friend’s Wedding opposite Julia Roberts back in 1997, and as far as the latest news goes, a sequel is now in the early stages of development. When asked about what he might hope for his character in a future film, Mulroney was hesitant to speculate with the movie actually looking to be a reality. “I’m going to say something, and it’ll be the opposite,” he joked. “But boy, am I game for whatever they cook up. And the sooner, the better, that I’ll say. But I don’t know any information on the practicality of it or any of the content. I love it. I hope it happens right away.”
