1. Embrace creative freedom

“True creative freedom comes when you can focus fully on expression without worrying about the mechanics of creation,” Gloria says. “Normally, I write songs in the studio while figuring out melodies and lyrics, but for Raices, [my husband] Emilio had already written and fully produced the songs. I knew them inside out and could bring emotion to every note. That luxury—to just interpret, feel and inhabit the music—is rare. Learning to let go of control and trust the process is liberating. When you embrace this freedom, you can pour your soul into your work and create something extraordinary.”

2. Humor is a survival tool

“Even in the darkest moments, humor has saved me,” Gloria reveals with a smile. “Life will always challenge you, but finding laughter and lightness keeps you sane. I’ve learned not to take everything too seriously. Laughing at chaos, noticing the ridiculous, even when it hurts, reminds you of what really matters. Caring for my dad as a child taught me love is the only true value. Humor allows you to move forward, to heal and to find joy amidst difficulties. It’s not just fun—it’s survival, resilience and a way to see beauty in life even when it’s hard.”

3. Live and share love fully

“We’re here a short time, and everyone we meet has chosen their experiences for a reason,” Gloria says. “Life gives us challenges and joys to teach us and help us grow. The key is to live fully, share love and promote love in everything you do. Life is like a school; hardships and joys teach spiritual, emotional and creative lessons. Move forward with intention, embrace love and treasure every moment. That’s how you make life meaningful. Focusing on love—expressing it unconditionally—is the most important lesson I’ve learned, and it shapes how I approach everything.”

4. Creativity thrives in midlife

“Midlife has been my most creative period yet,” Gloria beams. “With my children grown and a strong partnership with Emilio, I finally have the space and time to focus on what inspires me. I don’t feel the pressure to prove myself anymore, so creativity flows freely. Life stages bring liberation—the ability to balance family, career and personal projects allows your passions to thrive. When you give yourself permission to explore, experiment and pursue joy, your work becomes richer, deeper and more meaningful. Midlife isn’t a slowing down—it’s the beginning of full, fearless expression.”

5. Honor your roots

“Roots matter. Embracing where you come from gives you strength, clarity and pride. I honor the cultures that shaped me—Cuban, Spanish, Lebanese, Italian, American—and my family, my grandparents, my parents. Everyone has roots, and they deserve respect. This album, Raices, reminded me that identity is something to celebrate unapologetically. Being proud of your heritage, speaking your language, and standing in your truth gives you confidence to face the world. When you honor your roots, you understand who you are, where you belong and the value of sharing your story with authenticity and courage.”

6. Connect with nature to center yourself

“Nature is one of the greatest teachers and healers. Even as a child, lying on my mother’s car roof staring at the stars helped me see how small my problems were. Today, animals, trees, sunlight and the outdoors keep me grounded and joyful. When life feels overwhelming, pausing to breathe, connect with the world and notice beauty restores perspective. Nature reminds us of life’s simple, extraordinary pleasures and teaches us patience, gratitude and resilience. By leaning into it, we find balance and clarity, returning to ourselves with calm, joy and renewed energy for whatever comes next.”

7. Focus on positivity and hope

“Change is the only constant, and even in dark times, everything shifts. Focusing on positivity, putting good into the universe and embracing change keeps life balanced. Death isn’t the end—it’s a transition—and while we’re here, our goal is to make the experience meaningful. Love, gratitude and hope are guiding lights. Life’s unpredictability is easier to navigate when you actively choose optimism, kindness and resilience. Even when challenges arise, maintaining hope and focusing on what you can give—love, positivity, joy—transforms your journey. It’s about creating a life worth living, full of purpose and heart.”
