Meet Johnny Cash’s 7 Children: The Musical and Meaningful Lives They’ve Built
The famed singer and musician had a big, blended family
One of the most iconic singer-songwriters in music history, it doesn’t come as a surprise that many of Johnny Cash’s seven children have pursued a career in music. Cash welcomed four children with his first wife, Vivian Liberto, one son with his second wife, June Carter Cash, and expanded his family by two when he welcomed June’s two daughters from her previous marriages into his life as his own. Though Cash wasn’t always the perfect father, his infidelity and substance abuse leaving a mark on his family over the years, his children remember him fondly and honor his legacy in their lives and careers. Here, get to know Johnny Cash’s seven kids.
Roseanne Cash is his eldest daughter at 70

Johnny Cash’s first daughter with his wife Vivian certainly took on her father’s musical skills. The career she’s cultivated has earned the singer multiple Grammy awards, chart-topping hits, a spot in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and recognition within the music industry as more than just Johnny Cash’s daughter. In addition to music, she’s penned several books and to this day, continues to tour and share her talents with the world.
Roseanne has remembered her father fondly over the years, even sharing a sweet tribute to him on his birthday earlier this year. “I’m so glad he was born, February 26th, 1932,” she wrote in the caption of her Instagram post. “My dad took so much joy in children—it was one of his most endearing qualities.”
Kathy Cash is his second-born at 69

Kathy Cash also shared her musical talent over the years like her siblings, though not to the same extent, as she didn’t love the feeling of being on stage, subject to so many eyes watching her, as she explained in an interview with Jeff Emond for Johnny Cash InfoCenter. Outside of music, she appeared in the film What’s the Matter with Gerald? (2016).
“A lot of people have asked me since I was born, ‘What is it like to have Johnny Cash for a dad?’ I don’t know anything else, it felt normal to me,” she explained to Emond. “I guess I realized in the 70s how famous he really was, it kind of took me by surprise. I thought, ‘Well, I live in California, I spend summers with him and Christmas and whenever he comes to spend time with us.’ But to me he was just dad and I didn’t know anything else. I don’t think I realized how big of a celebrity he really was until I was in my teens. Most of my memories are all family memories and great times that we had and great talks that we had. I really miss him. He was the smartest man I ever knew—and not just because he was my dad, [but] because he was.”
Cindy Cash is 65

Cindy Cash has also found success over the years as both a musician and an actress. Additionally, according to her website, she served as her father’s hair stylist and makeup artist for 27 years.
“He was a fun dad,” she told KEF America. “See, he was so mischievous. He still had that ‘bad boy’ in him. And he was so funny. He made his friends laugh so hard. Oh my god, you never knew what was going to come out of his mouth. When he was relaxed and being himself, he was funny. A lot of people don’t know that part of him, but he was one of the funniest people that ever lived.”
Tara Cash Schwoebel, 63, broke the family mold

Johnny’s daughter Tara took a different route when it came to her career path, previously selling her line of jewelry through the Johnny Cash online store. Cash’s daughter has lent her skills to the costume department of a handful of films over the years, and she even previously published a book gifted to her by her father, in which he answered a series of prompts.
Carlene Carter, 69, is Johnny’s stepdaughter

Carlene Carter is June Carter Cash’s daughter, whom she had with her husband prior to Johnny, Carl Smith. The accomplished country musician was involved in the music world from a young age, and to this day enjoys a booming career. She, too, often remembers her stepfather on social media, recently posting a tribute to the late singer on Instagram. “He was so much fun and such a loving father to me when he married Momma!,” she wrote in the caption of her photo of him attending her wedding. “Not a day goes by that I don’t miss him! Love him with all my heart.”
Rosie Carter Nix, Johnny’s other stepdaughter, passed at 45
Johnny’s stepdaughter Rosie also shared the same musical talents as both her stepdad and mother June, but she tragically passed away at the age of 45 from carbon monoxide poisoning, a few months after both Johnny and June passed away.
John Carter Cash, 55, is Johnny’s only son

John Carter Cash, the only child Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash had together, is the youngest of the bunch at 55 and also enjoys a life full of music—he’s even written a few children’s books! “My father was a great outdoorsman,” Carter Cash told The Guardian back in 2013. “From when I was about six we would spend countless hours together in the woods or on a lake. He taught me how to skin a rabbit and pluck a wild turkey. He showed me there is much more to nature than we can ever understand.”
