Fans know star Kunal Nayyar as the charming and lovable astronomer Raj Koothrappali from The Big Bang Theory. But off-screen, Nayyar has been quietly using his wealth to help people in need. Rather than splurging on luxury items, he spends time at night and just paying random families’ medical bills through GoFundMe.
The news comes not long after the family of James Van Der Beek shared their own GoFundMe to help cover their medical debt after Van Der Beek’s illness and recent passing.
“The greatest gift is the ability to give back”
It’s been reported that the cast of Big Bang Theory earned about $1 million per episode during the height of the series and thanks to 12 seasons on the show, Kunal Nayyar’s net worth is reported to be worth $45 million.
“Money has given me greater freedom and the greatest gift is the ability to give back, to change people’s lives,” Nayyar shared in an interview with The Paper. “We also support animal charities because we love dogs. But what I really love to do is go on GoFundMe at night and just pay random families’ medical bills. That’s my masked vigilante thing! So, no, money doesn’t feel like a burden. It feels like a grace from the universe.”
Not only does Kunal Nayyar GoFundMe donations pay medical bills for unsuspecting families, but he and his wife also fund scholarships for students who have disadvantaged backgrounds.
Why Nayyar chooses to give in secret
Nayyar explained his motivation: “Right now, people are not happy, because we are all expecting someone else to be kind,” he said. “We are expecting a president or a politician, some leader, to come and bring us world peace. But there is no world peace if your neighbor comes to your door wanting some sugar for their tea, and you lock it against them and say, ‘Get away.’… No one is going to come and change the world for you. You have to do it for yourself.”
