There are several versions to the story of how Monroe ended up in a potato sack dress, but no matter the outfit, she always looked iconic. The first version of the story is in line with what the Reddit post reads: “In 1951, the press criticized Marilyn Monroe’s dress, saying it looked cheap. She responded by posing in a potato sack dress.” As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, a young Monroe allegedly showed up to a party wearing a revealing red dress. When a columnist criticized her look, saying she would have looked better wearing a potato sack, Twentieth Century Fox had a bit of fun with the jab and had her don the dress.

Another version of the story suggests the potato sack photos were a publicity stunt, showcasing Monroe’s unique ability to make any outfit look glamorous. “Turning cheap into chic! Marilyn was the queen of making anything fashionable,” said one commenter on the viral Reddit post. “You know you’ve got it when you make a potato sack dress look hot,” wrote another.

Marilyn Monroe: A fashion icon

Beyond the iconic potato sack photos, Monroe defined some of Hollywood’s most memorable fashion moments. For example, one of the most well-known images in pop culture history is that of Monroe in the 1955 film The Seven Year Itch. The scene in which her halter-neck white dress is blown up by a windy subway grate is one of the most well-known scenes of the actress’s career.

In the 1953 film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, the actress stunned in a hot pink silky gown that lives in our minds all these years later. And how about the stunning gown the actress wore when she sang “Happy Birthday” to President Kennedy? So iconic was the garment that Kim Kardashian boldly wore the dress to walk the red carpet at the 2022 Met Gala. For me the most Marilyn Monroe moment is when she sang ‘Happy Birthday,’ to JFK, it was that look,” Kardashian told Vogue

Whether you remember her glamorous gowns or this playful potato sack, Marilyn Monroe always captivated audiences and continuously managed to stun.
