Mark Ballas is opening up about how he keeps his marriage strong. During a recent appearance on the 79th annual Tony Awards red carpet, the Dancing with the Stars pro revealed how he and his wife Brittany Jean Carlson—also known as BC Jean—have kept their love alive for almost 15 years. And trust us when we say it’s just as sweet and wholesome as you would imagine. To see what he had to say, read on.

A look at Mark Ballas and Brittany Jean Carlson’s love story

Ballas, 40, met Carlson, 39, in 2012 at a mutual friend’s party. They dated for four years before getting married in November of 2016.

“It was a three-day affair,” Ballas told People magazine at the time of their wedding. “It was great that so much of my family was able to come. It was like a reunion.”

Carlson added to that, telling the outlet, “We had so much fun. We keep saying we’re going to have to get everyone together again next year to celebrate our anniversary.”

As for the theme of the wedding? Carlson said they “went for an earthy vibe,” before sharing the story behind her wedding dress.

“I knew I wanted something unique and something that no one had ever worn before. I was really infatuated with the 1920s concept of beading and bohemian lining,” she told People. “I wanted something that was romantic and timeless but also edgy and true to my everyday style. I love backless and I did want to show some skin, but I loved the idea of having sleeves.”

Does Mark Ballas have kids?

Following their wedding, Ballas and Carlson went on to welcome a son, Banksi Wylde Ballas, in November 2023. For the most part the couple keeps him out of the spotlight, but occasionally Ballas will post a picture of his son’s hands on Instagram.

Prior to Banksi’s birth, Ballas shared on social media that his wife  suffered a miscarriage during Dancing With the Stars‘ 31st season in 2022.

“We lost a baby last year,” they wrote on the Instagram page for their band, Alexander Jean, in October 2023. “Just when we thought we were in a good place to tell friends + family, we received the heavy news that our little one wasn’t going to make it. We’ve been through hard times in our lives, but this was a different kind of sadness.”

Following that, Ballas opened up about the experience in an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast in 2025.

“During that season, we found out my wife was pregnant and we ended up losing our baby before the semifinal,” the dancer shared. “I had to leave her having the appointment to have the baby removed to come dance for the semifinal and then go on. That had just taken it out of me.”

Mark Ballas and his wife now

Nearly 15 years after meeting, Ballas and Carlson are still going strong. In fact, in a recent conversation with our sister site, Us Weekly, on the Tony Awards red carpet, they shared their secret to a happy, healthy and long-lasting marriage.

“We’re best friends. That’s the root of it. We do a lot of things together. This is our first trip away from our son, too, so we’re like, ‘date night,’” he told the outlet. “For us, 10 years is coming up. I love her more and more every day.”
